Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Benromach 21 Years Old

Tasting

Colour
A deep, sustained amber hue, reflecting its long maturation. Visually, the liquid appears slightly oily, leaving beautiful, thick legs on the sides of the glass.

Nose
The bouquet opens with indulgent sherry aromas, dominated by red fruits (raspberry, cranberry) and blood orange. These are joined by comforting notes of baked apple, honey and melting caramel, lifted by sweet spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. A delicate hint of woodsmoke and embers emerges in the background.

Palate
The palate opens softly, unfolding a remarkably creamy, velvety texture that coats the mouth. Flavours of bitter orange, raspberry and caramelised baked apple intertwine with notes of milk chocolate, coffee cream and vanilla. The mid-palate gains tension from vibrant spices such as black pepper and ginger. The medium-to-long finish lingers on toasted oak, cocoa and a subtle, elegant smokiness, leaving a pleasant, slightly dry sensation.

Food Pairing Tips and Tasting Moments
Designed for contemplative tasting moments, this spirit is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water, served between 16 and 20°C in a tulip-shaped glass (copita). Let it breathe for a few minutes to release its full complexity. At the table, it makes a wonderful end to a meal alongside a dark chocolate dessert, a blood orange tart or a red fruit tart. It also pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton, a mature cheddar, or an orange-glazed duck breast.

Mixology
Although its aromatic richness could theoretically inspire elaborate cocktails, this exceptional spirit is designed above all for neat tasting. Dilution and the addition of ingredients would risk masking the subtlety of its smoke and spice. It is therefore strongly recommended to enjoy it without embellishment.

Other Characteristics
This single malt stands out for its lightly peated profile (between 8 and 12 ppm in the malt). Its peat evokes a delicate, earthy campfire smoke, far removed from iodine or medicinal notes. It is bottled at 43% ABV.

The Elegance of a Speyside Single Malt by Benromach Distillery

Benromach: The Artisanal Soul of Speyside
Founded in 1898 in Forres, in the northern Speyside region, Benromach is an iconic distillery that upholds the tradition of pre-1960s Scotch whisky. Acquired in the 1990s by the renowned family firm Gordon & MacPhail, its current owner, the distillery stands out for its resolutely artisanal approach. Its human-scale production tools favour manual work, long fermentations in Oregon pine vats and the use of traditional worm tub condensers. Fed by the pure water of the Chapelton Springs, Benromach champions a strong identity: that of a lightly peated, fruity and oily malt. By scaling back its brokerage activities to focus on its own stills, Gordon & MacPhail has made Benromach a flagship of authentic, sustainable craftsmanship.

Benromach 21 Years Old: The Art of Ageing in First-Fill Casks
The pinnacle of the "Signature" range, this Single Malt Scotch whisky embodies the distillery's consummate craftsmanship. This Whisky is crafted from a rigorous selection of raw materials, using malted Scottish barley to achieve a moderate phenol level, and a slow distillation that yields a rich, textured spirit.

The true singularity of this 21 Years Old lies in its uncompromising maturation policy. Ageing takes place exclusively in first-fill casks. The blend brings together American oak ex-bourbon casks, contributing bright notes of vanilla and citrus, and ex-sherry casks from the famous "sherry triangle" in Spain, which dominate the profile with their fruity, spicy depth.

Resting for more than two decades in traditional dunnage-style warehouses with earthen floors, the spirit benefits from a slow, steady maturation. This method allows for a perfect integration of the power of the wood, the creamy smoothness of the spirit and the delicate smoky thread. Presented in understated packaging that highlights its artisanal character, this bottle is the result of meticulous in-house blending, offering enthusiasts a sophisticated and elegant interpretation of the region's historic style.
