Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Plenio Riserva 30th Anniversary 2023 from Umani Ronchi
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a lovely pale gold colour, brightened by subtle green highlights typical of the great age-worthy wines of its appellation.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich and complex. It opens with delicate notes of white flowers such as acacia and hawthorn, which blend harmoniously with aromas of ripe yellow fruit like vineyard peach and dried apricot. The whole is enhanced by indulgent touches of acacia honey and a hint of bitter almond.
Palate
On the palate, the structure is both ample and perfectly balanced. A lively acidity brings great freshness and energy, pairing beautifully with a silky, creamy texture. A fine saline minerality comes through, leading to an exceptionally long finish marked by notes of flint and candied citrus.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with the flavours of Mediterranean cuisine. It is an ideal match for raw or delicately cooked seafood, such as oysters and scallops, as well as grilled fish or a bouillabaisse. Its aromas also elevate dishes featuring artichokes or asparagus and poultry slow-cooked with lemon, and it pairs perfectly with cheeses such as a young pecorino or a herb-coated tomme.
Serving and ageing
Blessed with excellent ageing potential, the Plenio Riserva 30th Anniversary 2023 can be enjoyed until around 2038, provided it is stored in good conditions.
Other characteristics
This elegant, structured white wine has an alcohol content of 13% vol. To mark this anniversary vintage, it is exceptionally presented in an all-black “Black Edition” bottle.
The elegance and refinement of a great white wine from the Marche
The estate
Officially founded in 1957 by the Bianchi-Bernetti family and Gino Umani Ronchi, the estate has established itself as a leading benchmark in the Marche. Now run by Michele Bernetti, representing the third generation, Umani Ronchi farms 210 hectares spread across three wine-growing areas. The brand combines industrial scale with artisanal standards. Its commitment to sustainable viticulture and to showcasing local terroirs earned it the title of “Best Italian Winery of the Year” in 2024.
The vineyard
The grapes come from the historic zone of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico appellation, located in the hills near Cupramontana. This Italian vineyard lies at an altitude of between 250 and 350 metres and enjoys an east-facing exposure. The vines, planted in the early 1990s, thrive on deep clay-silt soils of Pliocene-Pleistocene origin. This low-fertility soil is ideal for producing high-quality grapes. The estate favours an environmentally friendly approach, with selective ploughing and yields kept to between 7 and 9 tonnes per hectare.
The vintage
The year benefited from an ideal combination of climatic factors. After a particularly sunny summer in 2022, the season continued with a cool autumn. These weather conditions encouraged slow, even ripening of the berries, achieving a perfect balance between freshness and sugar concentration, without any excess.
Winemaking and ageing
To produce the Plenio Riserva 30th Anniversary 2023, the grapes are harvested by hand into crates from late September to early October. After gentle pressing and a short skin maceration, the must is quickly chilled and then statically settled. Fermentation takes place 60% in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks (between 14 and 16°C) and 40% in 5,000-litre oak casks. Partial malolactic fermentation affects 10 to 15% of the volume. The wine is aged for around 12 months on fine lees, followed by a further 6 months in bottle.
Grape variety
100% Verdicchio.
