Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for the Valbuena 5 Ano 2021 from Vega Sicilia
Tasting
Nose
Initially closed, the nose needs aeration to reveal its full complexity. It then unveils intense black-fruit aromas reminiscent of blackberry, accompanied by spicy notes of allspice and an aromatic bouquet garni.
Palate
The palate stands out for its purity and precision. The tannins are perfectly chiseled, supported by ideally balanced acidity. The creamy texture envelops the palate before finishing on notes of crushed black pepper.
Food and wine pairings
The Valbuena 5 Ano 2021 pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, game in sauce, or a selection of aged cheeses. Its structure also allows it to elevate herb-roasted lamb.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to decant the wine a few hours before serving to allow it to fully open up. Serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C to appreciate its full aromatic complexity.
A Ribera del Duero wine of remarkable precision
The estate
Founded in 1864 by Eloy Lecanda in Valbuena de Duero, the Vega Sicilia estate stands out as an essential benchmark in Spain. Located in the heart of the Castile and León region, the property spans more than 1,000 hectares, including 210 hectares of vines, dominated by Tinto Fino. Owned by the Álvarez family since 1982, the estate perpetuates a unique approach combining Bordeaux techniques with Spanish terroir. Its legendary cuvées Unico and Valbuena, created in 1915, embody the excellence of Ribera del Duero.
The vineyard
The Vega Sicilia vineyard benefits from an exceptional location in the Ribera del Duero. Tinto Fino vines, the region’s emblematic grape variety, dominate the plantings and thrive on this outstanding terroir, which gives the wines their unique character and remarkable aging potential.
The vintage
The year 2021 in Spain was marked by contrasting weather conditions. The freezing winter saw temperatures drop to as low as -15°C. Spring was warm, followed by a cool summer. September, completely dry, enabled optimal ripening of the grapes under ideal conditions.
Winemaking and aging
The Valbuena 5 Ano 2021 benefits from meticulous winemaking that respects the estate’s traditions. The aging process, which gives this emblematic cuvée its name, allows the wine to develop complexity while preserving the fruit’s freshness.
Grape varieties
Tinto Fino (96%) and Merlot (4%).
