    Vinum

Barrel-influenced nose with dark fruit, mocha, tobacco, caramel; on the palate a sweet fruit core and well-integrated oak, fine tannins, lively acidity, medium-length finish on red berries. Very clean.

    Decanter

Intense aromatics, perfumed florals, dark chocolate, vanilla and exotic spices. Crisp and compact, this is clean and straight, with fine tannins and pure fruit supported by quite a firm structure. This has muscle with underlying power as the fruit flavours slowly grow. Darkly seductive, well produced and delivered. There’s something very classy about this wine. Chewy on the finish, bright but focused. Easy drinkability here. 100% new wood but you can’t taste it. Finishes fresh. Glamorous but full of energy too! I like this. 40 hl/ha. Clay-limestone and gravels. pH 3.6. Sept 20–Oct 5.

The wine blends 90% Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2027-2040. 90-92 pts

    Description

A second wine from Saint-Émilion Grand Cru combining power and elegance

    The estate

Château Valandraud, founded in 1989 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, is located in the Fongaban valley in Saint-Émilion. Initially a bold project on 0.6 hectare, it stood out for its membership in the garagiste movement, advocating innovative methods and limited production. Classified Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2012, the estate is recognized for its innovative practices and the finesse of its wines.

    The vineyard

Created in 1992, this second wine is named after the daughter of Murielle Andraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin. This cuvée is made from a dedicated vineyard, covering 15 hectares with an average age of 20 years, resting on the clay-limestone and siliceous terroirs of Saint-Émilion.

    The vintage

The 2024 vintage was characterized by contrasting climatic conditions that required particular attention in vineyard management. A mild and very rainy winter was followed by an equally wet spring, causing significant downy mildew pressure. The alternation of rain and sunny days during the summer delayed berry ripening.

    Vinification and ageing

Meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification. Aged in new barrels for 18 to 20 months, allowing the wine to develop its complexity while preserving fruit and freshness.

    Blend

Virginie de Valandraud 2024 is the result of a blend of merlot (90%), cabernet franc (5%), cabernet sauvignon (5%).
