Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for the Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 from Remoissenet Père et Fils

Tasting

Appearance

The wine shows a pale yellow hue with golden and green highlights, reflecting the youth and vibrancy of this grand cru. Its brightness and clarity evoke the signature elegance of cool Burgundy vintages.

Nose

The nose reveals remarkable aromatic intensity, dominated by floral notes of acacia, hawthorn and honeysuckle. These are joined by aromas of ripe white-fleshed fruits such as pear and white peach, alongside citrus nuances like lemon zest. Mineral touches reminiscent of limestone and chalk appear in the background, while subtle notes of anise, fennel and almond complete the aromatic profile.

Palate

On the palate, the wine unfolds a refined, elegant structure, carried by vibrant acidity that brings definition and freshness. The attack stands out for its energy and mineral precision, with flavors of citrus and white-fleshed fruits. The mid-palate shows lovely depth, expressing a harmonious balance between richness and tension. The texture charms with its finesse, avoiding any heaviness. The finish lingers impressively, leaving a persistent mineral impression with limestone and chalk accents—hallmarks of the exceptional terroir from which this wine originates.

Food and wine pairings

This Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 pairs perfectly with refined gastronomic dishes. It is an ideal match for sweetbreads in cream sauce, Bresse poultry served with a creamy morel or white truffle sauce. Noble fish such as turbot with beurre blanc also make a remarkable pairing. Seafood such as oysters, scallops or langoustines highlights the wine’s minerality. Finally, aged cheeses like Comté or Beaufort harmoniously round out this range of pairings.

Serving and cellaring

The Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. This wine has exceptional cellaring potential and can be kept until around 2035, or even beyond. A minimum aging period of 5 to 6 years will allow the wine to reach its peak and fully reveal its aromatic complexity.

An exceptionally mineral, elegant Burgundy grand cru

The estate

Founded in 1877 by Pierre-Alfred Remoissenet, the house Remoissenet Père et Fils embodies over 145 years of Burgundian excellence. Based in the historic heart of Beaune, this House underwent a major transformation in 2005 with its acquisition by Edward L. Milstein. Under the leadership of Bernard Repolt and the oenological expertise of Claudie Jobard, Remoissenet has established itself as a benchmark for Burgundy wines that combine tradition and modernity. Today, the house oversees around 25 to 40 hectares of vineyards across the Côte de Beaune, the Côte de Nuits and the Côte Chalonnaise, while maintaining selective partnerships with high-quality winegrowers. A non-interventionist approach and deep respect for terroirs form the cornerstones of this exceptional House’s philosophy.

The vineyard

The Montrachet is one of the most prestigious terroirs in Burgundy, covering around 8 hectares shared between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. This grand cru occupies a mid-slope position on brown limestone soils rich in limestone and marl, notably the famous layer of Pholadomya Bellona marl. This unique geological makeup, combined with optimal exposure and outstanding natural drainage, gives Montrachet its distinctive minerality and remarkable aging potential. Remoissenet’s parcels are primarily located in the commune of Puligny-Montrachet.

The vintage

The 2021 vintage in Burgundy proved particularly challenging for winegrowers. Severe frost episodes between April 5 and 9 significantly reduced yields. A cool, wet spring followed, creating pressure from fungal diseases. Fortunately, June brought favorable conditions for flowering. Veraison took place in good conditions from mid-August onward, with a stable September allowing optimal ripening. Harvest began on September 20. Despite limited volumes, this vintage produced wines of remarkable elegance, favoring finesse and purity over concentration—particularly well suited to expressing great terroirs such as Montrachet.

Winemaking and aging

The Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 harvest was carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting on three selection tables. Whole bunches were gently pressed before being vinified in small 350-liter wooden foudres. Alcoholic fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts, preserving the authenticity of the terroir. Malolactic fermentation occurred in the same vessels. Aging continued for 18 months in oak barrels, 10% new wood, with the remainder made up of barrels that had held one to three wines. This measured approach adds complexity without masking the expression of the terroir. The wine was neither fined nor filtered prior to bottling, ensuring maximum preservation of its organoleptic qualities.
