Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2015 by Bouchard Père & Fils

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a beautiful, intense ruby-red colour.

Nose

The nose reveals powerful, refined aromas of black cherry and dark chocolate. The bouquet gradually opens onto notes of ripe red fruits, spices and delicate woody nuances. Hints of cranberry add an extra dimension to the aromatic complexity.

Palate

On the palate, this wine stands out for its remarkable balance. Supple tannins are supported by finely judged acidity that brings freshness and structure. The wine improves as the tasting progresses, revealing a harmonious integration of oak. The finish is long and savoury, combining a masculine character with a fruit-driven expression.

Food and wine pairings

This Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2015 is an ideal match for game meats such as venison loin or spice-roasted pigeon. It also pairs perfectly with a Tournedos Rossini or well-aged cheeses with a pronounced character.

Serving and cellaring

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2015 is best served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C (61–64°F). This wine has cellaring potential through around 2025.

A sun-drenched, generous Burgundy Grand Cru by Bouchard Père & Fils

The estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, a textile merchant who gradually turned to the wine trade, the House of Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest and most extensive estates. With around 130 hectares across the Côte d'Or, including 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru, it holds the region’s largest vineyard holdings. Acquired in 2022 by François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines, the estate embarked on a major restructuring under the direction of Frédéric Engerer: creation of Domaine des Cabottes for the 35 hectares of exceptional terroirs, withdrawal from négociant activity, full conversion to organic farming and a biodynamic approach for the premium parcels.

The vineyard

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of Burgundy’s most prestigious vineyards, with a history dating back to 640 AD. This 14.5-hectare Grand Cru benefits from an ideal east-facing exposure on a slope between 240 and 280 metres in altitude. The soils show remarkable complexity: siliceous, gravelly brown soils at the top of the slope; limestone material with variable clay content mid-slope; and a deep fossil-bearing limestone subsoil. This exceptional geology gives the wines their distinctive mineral character and outstanding ageing potential.

The vintage

The 2015 vintage in Burgundy was marked by particularly favourable weather conditions. After a mild winter, the year saw strong contrasts, with a cool spring followed by a prolonged heatwave from mid-May to mid-August, characterised by exceptional sunshine and periods of drought. This sun-filled year produced rich, concentrated wines with a pronounced structure that rewards patience to fully reveal their complexity.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes for Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2015 are harvested by hand, then carefully sorted and destemmed. Fermentation takes place in small vats with temperature control, followed by gentle pressing. Ageing is carried out in French oak barrels for twelve to eighteen months, with a proportion of new oak ranging from 45 to 100% depending on the needs of the vintage.

Grape variety

Pinot noir.
