The expression of the great Chardonnays of Mesnil sur Oger by Valentin Leflaive
The estate
Created in 2015 by Olivier Leflaive, this Champagne estate covers several lieux-dits in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Based in Oger with its cellars, Valentin Leflaive develops several lieu-dit cuvées by applying a Burgundian philosophy to Champagne. Owned by the Leflaive family, the House of Champagne Valentin Leflaive emphasizes the expression of limestone terroirs through partial barrel vinification, extended ageing, and minimalist dosages, creating cuvées with a distinctive mineral identity.
Vineyard
This Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Mesnil sur Oger 16 50 comes exclusively from the Grand Cru terroir of Mesnil Sur Oger, within exceptional parcels such as Champ d'Alouette, Volibart, and Jeamprunt. The vines flourish on outcropping chalk and flint soils, benefiting from a south and southeast exposure. The vineyard management adheres to the principles of Sustainable Champenoise viticulture.
The letters indicate the grape variety and/or parcel of each cuvée, while the numbers specify the years of the reserve wines used and the dosage. Thus, this cuvée was born from the parcels of Mesnil sur Oger, 2016 is the year of the base blend and finally 5.0 g is the sugar dosage per liter.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand before a fractional pressing to retain only the essence of the grape. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by a 36-month aging on laths. The Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Mesnil sur Oger 16 50 was bottled in June 2017 and was disgorged on July 1, 2020.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay, this cuvée includes 12% reserve wines that bring complexity and depth to the final blend.
