Geoffroy Champagne : Key Points

The history of the Geoffroy family harks back to the 17th century with a few parcels of vines located in the village of Cumières, in the heart of the Marne Valley in Champagne.

The Geoffroy Champagne House was founded in the early 1950s under the impetus of Roger Geoffroy and his wife Julienne, who decided to make their first wines themselves.

Following the death of his father, René Geoffroy and his wife Bernadette joined the family estate and developed the surface area of the vineyard and the reputation of the house.

At the end of the 1980s, Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy and his wife Karine joined the estate and decided to transfer the winemaking and commercial activities to Ay.

Margaux, Sacha, Rosalie, Colombine and Azalée Geoffroy are the fourth generation to work at the house.

Comprising a surface area of 14 hectares, the vineyard spreads over the hillsides of Damery, Hautvillers, Fleury la rivière and Cumières. This terroir is unique due to its 35 plots of land which are composed of Pinot Noir (42%), Pinot Meunier (34%) and Chardonnay (24%).

In a continuous search for balance and expression of each plot, the vineyard management favours the microbial activity in the soils, in particular through ploughing instead of using weedkillers, spontaneous grassing, the use of organic manure and limited human intervention.

This search for respect and a pure fruity expression is also the guiding principle throughout the vinification process. The grapes harvested at optimum maturity are pressed in the "old-fashioned" way to extract fine, precise juice. A parcel-by-parcel vinification in enamelled vats, tuns, barrels and demi-muids brings out the nuances of expression of each parcel. Malolactic fermentation is not favoured in order to preserve the original freshness of the fruit. After blending, the champagnes are aged for 3 to 8 years, depending on the cuvée, in the estate's cellars.
