A Grand Cru Rosé Champagne Combining the Excellence of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims
The Estate
The Maison de Champagne Valentin Leflaive was born from the meeting of two great French traditions: the Burgundian expertise of the Leflaive family and the prestigious terroir of Champagne. Founded in 2015 by Olivier Leflaive, the renowned winemaker of Puligny-Montrachet, the house came into being with the ambition to transpose the excellence and precision of Burgundy's great white wines into the crafting of terroir-driven champagnes. The name Valentin is that of Olivier's son, born in 2007.
The approach is parcel-focused, exacting, and resolutely centered on expressing the Chardonnay grape, mainly sourced from the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, etc.). Each cuvée reflects a unique identity, vinified in small volumes, with meticulous attention to aging (often partly in barrels), low dosage and aromatic purity. Valentin Leflaive thus embodies a pure, elegant style that appeals to lovers of signature wines.
The Vineyard
The Rosé Brut MA 17 60 cuvée comes from a Blend of two exceptional Grand Cru terroirs of Champagne: 49% from Mesnil-sur-Oger and 51% from Ambonnay. The vines, over 20 years old, benefit from a southeast exposure on flint and chalk soils at Mesnil-sur-Oger (119m altitude) and on clay-limestone over Sénonian chalk at Ambonnay (100m altitude). Sustainable Champagne viticulture guides the vineyard management.
The letters define the grape variety and/or the plot of each cuvée, while the numbers indicate the years of the reserve wines used and the dosage. Thus this cuvée originates from the Mesnil-sur-Oger (M) and Ambonnay (A) parcels, 2017 is the year of the base Blend and finally 6.0 g is the sugar dosage per liter.
Winemaking and Aging
100% manual harvesting is followed by fractional pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with the incorporation of 19% reserve wines. This Rosé Champagne was bottled in May 2018 and benefited from sur lie aging for at least 36 months. Disgorgement took place on November 3, 2021.
Blend
51% Pinot Noir and 49% Chardonnay compose this blend, with the addition of 11% of Red wine from Ambonnay to achieve the rosé color.
