Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 La Fleur de Gay opens with scents of tar, rubber and new leather, giving way to a core of baked black and red plums, blackberry compote and licorice. Medium-bodied, the palate has plenty of energetic back fruit with ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing earthy.

Black fig, plum and blackberry compote flavors give this a dark, juicy profile, with notes of ganache and roasted apple wood in the background. Features plenty of energy for balance, ending with a lively bramble streak as the fruit hangs on easily. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 418 cases made.

This is a deep and rich Pomerol for the vintage with attractive density and polish, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Full to medium body. Flavorful and complex with lots of chocolate, smoked cedar and dark fruit. Will come together nicely. Drink after 2022.

The 2017 La Fleur de Gay has an attractive bouquet with raspberry and strawberry fruit, mixed with scents of black tea and a hint of chestnut. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, good acidity, and a slightly earthy, minty finish that just lacks that final flourish. Overall, a decent Pomerol to drink over the next 12 to 15 years.

The 2017 Chateau La Fleur De Gay is another terrific 2017 that shines for its complexity. Black cherries, cedary herbs, earth, flowers, and forest floor notes all define the bouquet, and while it shows the straight, focused style of the vintage, it has wonderful fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish. Drink it any time over the coming 15 years or more.

Kunz barrel sample 18: Velvety, dense, complex bouquet, strawberries, delicate redcurrant jelly, fine liquorice, cedar, currants. Finely opulent, tightly woven, powerful palate with dense, sweet fruit, plenty of fine tannins, creamy structure, varied, powerful aromatics, long, aromatic finish with sweet after-flavours.

La Fleur de Gay 2017 has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It gives up scents of baked black and red plums, dried herbs, and tobacco leaves, with wafts of leather and cumin seed. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling savory layers, with a chewy texture and an herbal lift on the finish.

The bouquet of Fleur de Gay reveals two clearly distinct elements: notes of black berries, slightly candied, and varietal notes, bringing freshness. With a bit of air, it shows notes of redcurrant and a hint of strawberry. Juicy on the attack. The wine has tight, fine-grained tannins. The finish has good intensity, well supported by the aromatic expression and the structure.

This superb achievement is confirmed. A complex, deep nose, fruity with fine toasted notes. A silky palate with a melting, ample, juicy body, and bright, lifted flavor. Good persistence with hints of dried fruit, without any tannic edges. One of the year’s great successes.

100% Merlot. Opaque purple with a black core and violet highlights. Concentrated black-berry nose, backed by dark roasted notes and chocolate pastilles. On the very deep palate, a tightly knit tannic framework, silky texture, and brilliantly supporting freshness deliver incredible precision. In the focused, long finish, an explosion of dried blue berries, gorgeous caramel notes, and dark minerality. An erotic Pomerol that has firmly taken its place among the elite!

Description

The finesse and elegance of a great Pomerol by Château La Fleur de Gay

The property
Located in the heart of the Pomerol appellation and in the immediate vicinity of Château La Croix de Gay, Château La Fleur de Gay is one of the iconic properties of the Right Bank in the Bordeaux region. With a presence in the Pomerol commune attested since the 15th century, the Raynaud-Lebreton family heads a property overseeing a vineyard with a terroir as rare as it is exceptional.

The vineyard
Château La Fleur de Gay 2017 comes from three plots of the high terrace of Pomerol, all with different geological characteristics. In the same vein as Pétrus, the plot on "La Boutonnière" consists of pure clay. The Gay plot, located on the western part of the Château La Fleur terroir, benefits from a privileged location on the thick gravelly ridge of the Günz. Finally, the exceptional location of the Groupey plot, adjoining the upper part of Château Trotanoy to the southeast and near Château Le Pin, allows for soils composed of very granular Günz gravels on clay subsoils.

Blend
92% merlot, 8% cabernet franc.
