Description

The freshness and elegance of a Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion

The estate
Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion, the Château La Tour Figeac was founded in 1879 when it separated from Château Figeac to which it had been attached. Since 1994, Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier has been at the head of the estate.

The vineyard
The vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac enjoys an exceptional location in Saint-Émilion, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. The 14.6 hectares of vineyard are located between Château Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac. The vines, averaging 37 years old, are planted on a beautiful gravelly-sandy terroir resting on deep clay. Since 1997, the vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac has been managed ecologically with the implementation of organic and biodynamic practices. Herbal teas and natural preparations are used to care for the vines while considering the entire ecosystem. The estate has gone even further in its respect for the environment and the vineyard by planting cereals between the vine rows to strengthen the soils and limit erosion.

The vintage
After a particularly mild winter, a wet, cool spring, the summer of 2019 was marked by high temperatures with record heat. Late July rains helped limit water stress on the vineyard. The harvest at Château La Tour Figeac therefore took place from 20 September to 3 October 2019. In the vineyard, the estate’s technical teams carried out light green harvests, which enabled good maturity. 2019 marks the second official year of conversion to organic farming. In the cellar, 2019 was also a decisive year as the barrel cellar was completely renovated. La Tour Figeac chose to invest in 400-liter barrels and amphorae. These measures are designed to enhance the finesse of the estate wines’ tannins while preserving a high purity of fruit expression.

Blend
This Château La Tour Figeac 2019 is a blend of Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (35%).
