The elegance and freshness of a great red wine from Pessac-Léognan
The estate
Acquired and renamed in 1803 by Pierre de Malartic, Château Malartic-Lagravière is an emblematic figure of the Bordeaux region. This prestigious estate enjoys international renown thanks to its status as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, a rare distinction that it holds for both its red and white wines. Today, the property is passionately run by the Bonnie family. These dedicated owners enhance this exceptional terroir to produce cuvées renowned for their elegance and complexity.
The vineyard
Located at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the estate spans 73 hectares, 66 of which are dedicated to red grape varieties. The vines, with an average age of 28 years and planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare, thrive on dry, clayey Günzian gravel mounds, resting on a shelly limestone subsoil. Strongly committed to preserving biodiversity, the team practises agro-ecology with cover crops, eco-grazing and horse-drawn ploughing. These efforts are rewarded by High Environmental Value level 3 and ISO 14001 certifications.
The vintage
A rainy winter built up significant water reserves in the soils, allowing the vines to comfortably weather a hot, dry summer punctuated by two heatwaves. The result is perfectly ripe grapes that still retain lovely acidity. The white harvest, which began on 26 August, yielded flavourful, dense and aromatic wines, with remarkable liveliness and a saline finish. The red harvest, which started on 9 September with generous, fruity Merlots, continued until 3 October, giving the Cabernets time to reach their full potential. Ultimately, 2025 combines generosity, freshness and balance, promising great white as well as red wines.
Vinification and ageing
The manual harvest took place from 9 September to 3 October depending on the plots. After rigorous sorting in the vineyard, on a double sorting table and by optical system, the grapes are vinified in small truncated wooden vats as well as temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Advised by oenologist Eric Boissenot, Château Malartic-Lagravière 2025 benefits from traditional ageing on fine lees in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
Grape varieties
57.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc.
