Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Starting to become a bit more attenuated on the finish, but still very pleasingly perfumed, with notes of dusty earth, herbs, black cherries, tobacco, and licorice, this medium-bodied wine is behaving more like a Medoc than a typical St.-Emilion. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted, 11/02.

Wine Spectator

Minty, herbal style, but there's plenty of ripe currant flavor on the lean frame to finish strong and suggest good development ahead with cellaring until at least 1994.

Jancis Robinson

Showing plenty of intensity on the nose and palate, there’s concentration here with some fleshy notes and a fine combination of brisk acidity and dark fruit. Meaty notes and some graphite on the finish. Still full of life. (AWH)

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

After that rather aromatic ’87, the ’86 is in the same vein. It smells of mint and anise, like a white wine. That shows just how much aroma this cru has! The palate lacks breadth, but on the other hand, it doesn’t dry out. It’s good and hard to spit. Normal length. This slightly worn style of wine is often much appreciated by English merchants.

Description

An elegant Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion with a delicate mouthfeel

The estate

On the right bank of Bordeaux, where estates often span only a few hectares, Château Troplong Mondot stands out for its size. Founded in 1700, this iconic Saint-Émilion property ranks among the appellation’s most prestigious estates. Elevated to the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé, it embodies the excellence and grandeur of Bordeaux’s right bank.

The vineyard

Perched at 110 meters above sea level, the Troplong Mondot vineyard sits on clay-limestone soil that promotes optimal grape ripening. This noble terroir imparts to this Saint-Émilion wine remarkable finesse and a subtle balance of power and elegance.

Grape varieties

The estate’s grape varieties give pride of place to Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This harmonious trio yields deep, structured wines with excellent aging potential and seductive aromatic complexity.
