Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the 2016 Belle Leone from Domaine Peyre Rose
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine reveals a deep ruby colour, enhanced by delicate brown hues that reflect its patient maturation.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is particularly expressive, releasing powerful scents of juicy black fruits such as blackcurrant. The whole is enhanced by touches of leather and a pleasant freshness reminiscent of peppermint and garrigue scrubland.
Palate
The attack is broad and enveloping, revealing a harmonious texture dominated by intense black fruit flavours. The structure relies on fine, slightly pronounced tannins, leading to a remarkably persistent finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, slow-cooked dishes such as beef daube, or a fine roasted farmhouse poultry. It will also perfectly complement a board of mature, full-flavoured cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate the 2016 Belle Leone, it is recommended to decant it one to two hours before tasting and to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18 °C. With exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2038.
The Masterful Expression of a Vin de France by Domaine Peyre Rose
The Estate
Officially founded in 1988 with its first independent vinification, Domaine Peyre Rose is an iconic property located in Saint-Pargoire, in the heart of the Languedoc. Led since its inception by the passionate Marlène Soria, its current owner, the estate spans around 24 hectares of vines surrounded by wild garrigue scrubland. A true hallmark of the winemaker's exacting standards, her approach is environmentally conscious and involves exceptionally long ageing periods. Today, the estate enjoys international renown, offering Mediterranean wines of rare complexity.
The Vineyard
The vines used for this Vin de France thrive on the heights of a preserved plateau, forming a true natural stronghold amid the garrigue scrubland of the Hérault. The terroir consists mainly of very stony clay-limestone soils, mixed with crumbly limestone and iron-rich red clays. Committed to preserving this unique ecosystem, the estate follows the principles of organic farming and biodynamics, while also embracing a sustainable farming approach to promote local biodiversity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes are carefully hand-harvested before being fully destemmed. Fermentation begins naturally through the exclusive action of indigenous yeasts. This is followed by long maceration periods allowing for gentle, gradual extraction. The distinctiveness of the 2016 Belle Leone then lies in its patient maturation process: it undergoes extended ageing in tank for nearly a decade, ensuring perfect integration of the tannins before bottling.
Grape Varieties
This cuvée is crafted from a blend of 90% Syrah, the estate's signature grape variety, complemented by 10% Mourvèdre, which lends structure to the whole.
