The pure, mineral expression of a white Burgundy by Domaine Ponsot
The estate
Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, Domaine Ponsot is a historic figure of Burgundy, located in Morey-Saint-Denis. A pioneer in estate bottling as early as the 1920s, the estate has distinguished itself through its respectful approach to terroir and its massale selections of Pinot Noir. Today, Rose-Marie Ponsot runs the estate, alongside winemaker Alexandre Abel. True to its non-interventionist philosophy, Domaine Ponsot produces authentic wines while incorporating modern technologies to guarantee the authenticity of its bottles around the world.
The vineyard
The vineyard from which this Saint-Romain originates is located in the Côte de Beaune, within a valley at an altitude ranging from 280 to 400 metres. This cooler microclimate rests on clay-limestone soils that give the wine its characteristic minerality. The 0.48-hectare plot, planted with vines around 30 years old, is cultivated without the use of insecticides or pesticides, in full respect of natural cycles. This respectful approach perfectly illustrates the spirit of Burgundy winemaking.
The vintage
Following a previous year marked by heavy losses, the 2022 vintage offered milder climatic conditions. However, the vines had to contend with significant periods of drought, leading to a roughly thirty percent reduction in yields across the region.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting of defective bunches carried out directly on the vine. The vinification of the Saint-Romain Village "Cuvée de la Mésange" 2022 takes place naturally, through the action of indigenous yeasts, without filtration or fining. Aging lasts between 18 and 20 months in old oak barrels, as the estate completely excludes the use of new wood in order to preserve the pure expression of the terroir.
