Description

Tasting notes and serving suggestions for the Côte du Py 2024 by Jean-Marc Burgaud

Tasting

Nose

The nose reveals a charming, expressive aromatic profile, dominated by notes of red and black fruit. Scents of black cherries, plums and wild berries come through, accompanied by hints of cranberry and pomegranate. Floral nuances of fresh peony round out the bouquet, while notes of embers and sweet spices add an extra dimension to the overall impression.

Palate

The palate is full and fleshy, delivering a harmonious, succulent whole. Silky, melting tannins combine with bright acidity that brings freshness. The pronounced minerality reflects the identity of the Côte du Py’s schist terroir. The finish stands out for its length and precision, with excellent tannic definition that underscores the quality of this vintage.

Food and wine pairings

This Morgon pairs perfectly with traditional Lyonnais charcuterie, a beef tenderloin in sauce or a game terrine. It also matches elegantly with roasted duck breast with cherries, leg of lamb or lasagna. Cheese lovers will also appreciate this pairing, as well as one with a roast pork.

Serving and cellaring

The Côte du Py 2024 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 15 to 16°C. This wine has fine aging potential and can be cellared until around 2032.

A characterful Morgon from the emblematic Côte du Py terroir

The estate

Founded in 1989 in the Beaujolais, Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud was born when its founder, a Beaune graduate, leased three hectares of vines. Today, the estate covers 19 hectares, mainly located in Villié-Morgon, including 13 hectares in AOC Morgon. Trained in Burgundy, Jean-Marc Burgaud applies a parcel-by-parcel approach to Gamay, favoring semi-carbonic vinifications with whole-cluster harvests, native yeasts and meticulous aging. Named a “coup de cœur du Beaujolais” by the Revue du Vin de France in 2025, the estate produces elite wines recognized for their velvety texture and ageworthiness.

The vineyard

The Morgon Côte du Py comes from 7.5 hectares spread across several parcels located on this emblematic site. The 60-year-old Gamay noir à jus blanc vines are trained in gobelet and harvested by hand. The terroir is characterized by schist soils composed of decomposed rock and blue stones rich in iron oxide and manganese, giving the wine its mineral signature and distinctive depth.

Vinification and aging

The Côte du Py 2024 is crafted using a traditional semi-carbonic winemaking method. Whole grapes macerate for 14 days at a temperature of 25 to 26°C, promoting the extraction of fruity aromas and fine tannins. The wine results from the blending of free-run and press wines. Aging takes place in tanks for 9 months, allowing the wine to develop its structure and balance. Bottling takes place in July.
