Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Côte du Py "James" 2023 from Jean-Marc Burgaud
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep, intense ruby hue.
Nose
The nose shows fine aromatic complexity, with fragrances of ripe black fruit, notably blackberry and black cherry. These aromas are accompanied by spicy and floral notes, in particular pressed violet, offering great precision and remarkable concentration. On the finish, hints of blood orange add a touch of originality.
Palate
The palate offers a medium-bodied texture with a savory attack and a firm structure that brings tension and energy. The ripe yet firm tannins form a compact framework. The balance is remarkable despite the wine’s concentration. The finish is persistent and long, elegantly dry and flavorful, leaving an impression of striking depth.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with veal paupiettes, beef tongue or calf’s head. It also matches very well with white meats in sauce.
Serving and cellaring
The Côte du Py "James" 2023 can be served at a temperature of 15-16°C. This highly concentrated, very rich wine offers excellent aging potential.
A cellar-worthy Morgon from the Côte du Py
The estate
Founded in 1989 by Jean-Marc Burgaud, a graduate in viticulture and oenology from Beaune, the estate took off in 1992 with the takeover of vineyards on the Côte du Py. Based in Villié-Morgon, Jean-Marc Burgaud now farms 19 hectares in the heart of Beaujolais, including 13 hectares in AOC Morgon. He favors a parcel-by-parcel approach inspired by Burgundy, working his soils with a minimalist mindset and vinifying with indigenous yeasts. His wines, recognized by leading guides, embody the elite of Beaujolais with outstanding value for money.
The vineyard
The James cuvée comes from a plot located near the cross on the Côte du Py, in the heart of the Morgon appellation. The 60-year-old Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc vines are trained in the gobelet style and harvested by hand. The terroir is characterized by schist soils made up of decomposed rocks and blue stones rich in iron oxide, giving the wine its typicity and minerality.
Vinification and aging
The Côte du Py "James" 2023 is crafted using traditional semi-carbonic vinification. Whole bunches macerate for 14 days at a temperature of 25-26°C. Each plot is vinified separately before blending the free-run juice and the press wine. Aging takes place for 1 year in 6-year-old barrels, followed by 3 months in tank. Bottling takes place in December.
Grape variety
100% Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc.
