Description

The Vibrancy and Precision of a Crozes-Hermitage Wine

The estate

Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain-l’Hermitage, the Paul Jaboulet-Aîné House now farms 125 hectares in the Rhône Valley, including 25 hectares on the Hill of Hermitage, making it the second-largest owner in this emblematic appellation. Acquired by the Frey family in 2006, the house is led by winemaker Caroline Frey. Certified organic since 2016, the estate is continuing its transition to biodynamic farming. Its flagship wine, Hermitage La Chapelle 1961, is recognized among the greatest wines of the 20th century.

The vineyard

Averaging 25 years old, the vines dedicated to the Les Jalets cuvée take root on the lower terraces of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, made up of glacier-born rounded pebbles.

Vinification and aging

The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates. After whole-cluster pressing, the musts undergo 48 hours of settling. Fermentation takes place partly in French oak barrels, in concrete eggs, and in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. The aging of this Rhône Valley wine lasts 8 months, split evenly between barrels on the one hand, and concrete eggs and stainless-steel vats on the other.

Grape varieties

Les Jalets 2024 from Paul Jaboulet-Aîné is the result of a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne.
