James Suckling

This is very intense, with burnt brown sugar, toffee, caramel, treacle tart and volatile notes. Burnt orange peel, too. Hint of turpentine, but it’s no bother. It’s full-bodied, very sweet and dense like molasses, but it remains liquid and lightly syrupy. The finish is intense and powerful with a light acetone note to the caramel character. It was aged 125 years in cask in a forgotten cellar in the Douro Valley and bottled in 2021. A tiny-production, uniquely historical fortified wine. Drink now.

From the stock acquired when The Fladgate Partnership bought tawny specialists Wiese & Krohn. Launched in 2021 during COVID-19. Almost all sold. Dark brownish green. Very ancient nose smelling of bracken. Really very syrupy. High-toned and then a lot of acid that makes it rather painful to taste. A slight caramel note. More of a relic than a wine, really. Drink dates are highly speculative! (JR)

André Kunz

(of the 50 barriques laid down in 1896, only 2 barriques of 600 liters remain due to evaporation, CHF 4,500.-) Dense, complex, finely creamy, peppery, powerful bouquet: prunes, damsons, Ricola, pear syrup, cedar, graphite, walnuts, roasted almonds, dark caramel, dried figs, black tea smoke, graphite and many other aromas. Multi-layered, creamy, powerful palate with a concentrated structure, delicate sweetness, intense and superb aromatics, plenty of fine extract, well-integrated alcohol, and a very long, powerful finish with many sweet retro-olfactory notes. 20/20 to drink

Description

Tasting Characteristics and Recommendations for the Single Harvest 1896 Crystal Carafe Limited Edition from Taylor’s

Tasting

Appearance
This centenary porto reveals a magnificent mahogany hue with olive-green reflections at the edges.

Nose
The bouquet unfolds with remarkable complexity, revealing intense aromas of black coffee, liquorice and sawn cedar wood. Added are notes of dried rose petals, fennel, eucalyptus, black pepper and vanilla, creating an ensemble of exceptional richness.

Palate
The attack is dense, round and velvety, offering volume and concentration. Flavours of coffee, salted butter caramel and orange zest dominate the palate, perfectly balanced by a fresh acidity that counterbalances the natural sweetness of the porto.

Pairing Recommendations and Tasting Occasions

This exceptional porto is best served lightly chilled between 12°C and 16°C. Ready to drink without any need for decanting, it can be kept open for up to two months without losing its freshness. Store in a cool place at a constant temperature, away from direct light.

An exceptional centenary porto from the Douro Valley

Taylor’s, three centuries of excellence in the Douro

Founded in 1692, Taylor’s is one of the oldest Porto houses, established in the Duriense region of Portugal. This family estate, now headed by Adrian Bridge as Managing Director, includes the Quinta de Vargellas acquired in 1896. Taylor’s is distinguished by its exceptional reserves of portos aged in artisan oak barrels in its historic Oporto cellars. The house produces outstanding fortified wines, notably centenary colheitas such as the legendary Single Harvest 1896, bearing witness to over 325 years of passed-down expertise.

Single Harvest 1896 Crystal Carafe Limited Edition, a heritage treasure

The Single Harvest 1896 Crystal Carafe Limited Edition represents the culmination of 125 years of patience and know-how. This exceptional vintage, born in the post-phylloxera renewal era, benefited from an unusually hot growing season with record temperatures in August 1896. Aged in the historic Oporto cellars in artisan oak barrels, this porto stands among the most remarkable vintages of the 19th century.

This limited edition of 1,700 numbered bottles is presented in a seven-faceted cut-crystal decanter, hand-engraved and gold-filled. The set comes in a cherry wood case accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Managing Director. This exceptional presentation underlines the unique character of this centenary porto, the result of a strict allocation reserved for a select clientele worldwide.
