The estate
Daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest wine-growing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. The Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve stretches across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs of wine-growing Burgundy.
With a view to creating synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard farms her plots in keeping with biodynamic principles and works with passion and the utmost attention to produce wines that reflect the identity of their terroir. From a 110-hectare vineyard worked in “agroecology”, the chardonnay and pinot noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are renowned for their quality, precision and elegance. Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the Domaine team as Technical Director.
The vineyard
The climat Pitangerets, located within the Saint-Aubin appellation, lies at the start of the slope, nestled between the Chassagne quarry and the Montrachet hillside. The terroir is characterized by limestone-rich soils with a significant amount of calcareous scree resulting from the erosion of the bedrock. The pinot noir vines were planted in the mid-1980s. Vineyard management follows biodynamic principles, using preparations 500 and 500P, as well as decoctions of horsetail, nettle, willow and silica. The soil benefits from natural grass cover and mechanical cultivation.
The vintage
The year 2022 in Bourgogne proved hot and dry, with four heat waves. Late budbreak helped protect the vines from April frosts. These climatic conditions gave rise to deeply colored red wines, supple on the palate, with fine concentration, silky tannins, fresh fruit aromas and a lively finish.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for the Saint-Aubin 1er cru "Pitangerets" 2022 are harvested by hand in small crates and then sorted on a sorting table. After 100% destemming, the whole berries are transferred to tanks via stainless-steel carts to avoid any crushing or pumping. Vinification follows the traditional Burgundian method in temperature-controlled open vats. Aging takes place for fifteen months in Burgundian barrels, with 25% new oak barrels and 75% barrels that have held two wines or more, from the coopers Hermitage, Stockinger and Damy.
Grape variety
Pinot noir (100%).
