The estate
Founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils remains one of Burgundy’s oldest wine merchant houses. Based since 1820 in the Château de Beaune, built by Louis XI in 1482, it now farms 130 hectares in the Côte d'Or, the largest estate in the region. With 12 hectares of Grands Crus and 74 hectares of Premiers Crus spread across some one hundred prestigious climats, including the monopole of Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus, the House now belongs to Artémis, François Pinault’s investment company.
The vineyard
The Climat Clos des Chênes covers 15.4 hectares within the Volnay appellation, on the Côte de Beaune. Bouchard Père & Fils owns 0.85 hectares there, located near the Taillepieds parcel. The vines enjoy a south-eastern exposure and are planted on clay-limestone soils over a limestone subsoil. The name of this climat comes from an old oak wood that has now disappeared.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for the Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes" Domaine 2022 are harvested by hand in small 13 kg crates, then carefully sorted bunch by bunch. After total or partial destemming depending on the vintage, fermentation takes place in small vessels. Gentle pressing precedes a vatting period of 15 to 20 days. Aging of this Burgundy wine takes place over 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, 25 to 35% of which are new, in the cellars of the Bastions of the former Château de Beaune. Annual production is slightly over 4,000 bottles.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
