A powerful, complex white wine from Alsace born of an outstanding terroir
The estate
Founded in 1947 in Bergheim, Domaine Marcel Deiss now spans 27 hectares across 220 parcels in 9 Alsatian communes. Mathieu Deiss currently leads this family estate, renowned for its innovative philosophy that favors the expression of terroir through a field blend of grape varieties. Biodynamically certified since 1997, the estate ranks among Alsace’s elite, with a fourth star from the Revue du Vin de France and a 5/5 rating from Bettane+Desseauve.
The vineyard
Burg is a Premier Cru located in Bergheim, in Alsace. The terroir is defined by variegated Keuper marls with rare limestone intercalations. Its due south exposure and sheltered position set back from the valley encourage optimal ripening. The vines are farmed biodynamically with planting densities ranging from 8,000 to 12,000 vines per hectare. The field blend of thirteen Alsatian grape varieties on this parcel allows for an authentic expression of the site.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage benefited from favorable conditions, allowing the grapes to reach full ripeness while preserving the hallmark freshness of great Alsace white wines.
Winemaking and aging
The Burg 2020 grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. Field blending means that all grape varieties are harvested and vinified together, unlike a classic blend. This ancestral method enables a natural integration of the different varieties directly in the vineyard.
Grape varieties
Field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Gewurztraminer.
