Tasting
Color
The wine displays a magnificent golden-amber hue, reflecting both its exceptional concentration and its evolution over the years.
Nose
The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity. Notes of exotic fruits such as lychee and mango mingle with aromas of candied fruit, notably baked pear and apricot. The bouquet gains depth with hints of honey, sweet spices, and delicate floral touches reminiscent of rose. With aeration, notes of caramel and candied fruit complete this generous aromatic palette.
Palate
On the palate, this lusciously sweet wine charms with its opulence and remarkable silky texture. The enveloping mouthfeel reveals flavors of exotic fruit and honey, supported by a fine acidity that brings balance and freshness to the whole. The finish lingers elegantly, leaving an impression of perfectly controlled richness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles is an ideal match for foie gras, whether pan-seared or prepared as a terrine. It also pairs beautifully with blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, fruit-based desserts like a tarte tatin or pear tart, as well as sweet-and-savory dishes combining fruit and poultry.
Serving and Cellaring
The Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles 2006 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 8 and 10°C. This wine has excellent aging potential and will continue to evolve favorably for many years.
An Exceptional Sweet Wine from the Alsatian Terroir
The Estate
Founded in 1947 by Marcel Deiss in Bergheim, Domaine Marcel Deiss now spans 26 hectares across 9 Alsatian villages. Currently led by Mathieu Deiss, assisted by his father Jean-Michel, the estate has established itself as a pioneer of co-planting and biodynamic farming in Alsace since 1998. Awarded four stars by La Revue du Vin de France, the estate stands out for its philosophy that places terroir at the heart of its wines’ expression. Mathieu and Jean-Michel Deiss rank 14th in Le Figaro Vin’s list of the 50 best winemakers in France, underscoring the excellence and innovation that define this family estate.
The Vineyard
Domaine Marcel Deiss’s vineyards benefit from the exceptional diversity of Alsatian terroirs. Located in the heart of Alsace, between the Vosges and the Rhine, the parcels enjoy varied exposures and complex soils ranging from limestone to marl, as well as sandstone. This geological mosaic, combined with a moderate continental climate and certified biodynamic practices, allows the vines to express themselves fully. The high planting density—between 8,000 and 10,000 vines per hectare—encourages aromatic concentration and depth in the wines produced.
The Vintage
The 2006 vintage was marked by weather conditions particularly favorable to the development of botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential to crafting a Sélection de Grains Nobles. These exceptional conditions enabled natural concentration of sugars and aromas in the berries, yielding wines of great richness and remarkable balance.
Winemaking and Aging
The Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles 2006 is made from carefully selected berries affected by noble rot. Hand harvesting ensures that only grapes with the optimal level of concentration are picked. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts naturally present, thereby preserving the authentic expression of the terroir. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters to preserve aromatic purity. The wine is then aged for 12 months on the lees in large oak casks, promoting the development of aromatic complexity and the harmonious integration of all components.
