A legendary Supertuscan from Maremma Toscana
The estate
Founded in 1978 in Maremma Toscana, Fattoria Le Pupille spans 75 hectares of vineyards between Scansano and Magliano. Led since 1985 by Elisabetta Geppetti, known as “La Signora del Morellino,” the estate is now owned by the Geppetti family, with Clara and Ettore ensuring the succession. As the first female president of the Morellino di Scansano consortium in 1992, Elisabetta Geppetti succeeded in crafting wines of remarkable elegance from this wild terroir.
The vineyard
Covering an area of 20 hectares, the vineyard dedicated to this cuvée is located in Pereta, in the heart of Maremma Toscana. The vines were planted in 1985, with another portion planted in 2006.
Saffredi was created in 1987 with the invaluable support of oenologist Giacomo Tachis, from the Magliano vineyard. Situated 250 meters above sea level, this vineyard is planted on soils of sandstone, marl, iron-rich minerals, and clay. Saffredi from Fattoria Le Pupille is a tribute to Elisabetta’s mentor Fredi, who inspired her passion for wine.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest for Saffredi 2023 ran from the first half of September for Merlot through to October for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Fermentation took place at 26°C in stainless-steel tanks, followed by extended maceration lasting 30 to 45 days. This Tuscan wine was aged for 18 months in French barriques, 70% of which were new oak.
