Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Montrachet Grand Cru 2023 Jean Chartron

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a luminous golden hue adorned with delicate emerald nuances.

Nose
The bouquet unveils great complexity, blending intense aromas of rich citrus with a deep imprint of crushed stone. It remains somewhat reserved, offering a compact profile with great precision.

Palate
The palate impresses with its concentration, density and depth, perfectly balanced by a striking minerality and beautiful tension. The acidity is harmoniously integrated, bringing freshness and brightness. The finish, of exceptional length, testifies to the power and refinement of this wine.

Food and wine pairing

This great white wine pairs wonderfully with noble shellfish such as roasted lobster, spiny lobster or fine prawns. It also enhances firm-fleshed fish such as monkfish, wild line-caught sea bass or turbot, as well as poultry in creamy mushroom sauces or delicate meats such as veal.

Service and storage

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Montrachet Grand Cru 2023 at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Decanting is optional. This wine, built for long-term cellaring, will begin to fully open up from 2028 and can be enjoyed until around 2038.

The elegance and minerality of a great white Burgundy

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron is a true institution in Burgundy. Established in Puligny-Montrachet, this family-run estate today spans 14.5 hectares across the region's finest appellations. Currently led by Jean-Michel Chartron, representing the fifth generation, alongside his sister Anne-Laure, the estate stands out for its environmentally conscious approach and traditional winemaking methods. The wines produced precisely reflect the richness of Burgundy's terroirs, combining purity, balance and a subtle mastery of oak ageing.

The vineyard

The estate cultivates a privileged 0.80-hectare plot located in the central and northern part of the illustrious Montrachet appellation. The vines, averaging around forty years old, thrive on shallow soils composed of hard limestone crossed by a band of reddish marl. This exceptional terroir, farmed according to organic principles, benefits from meticulous soil management and rigorous vine care to ensure grapes of optimal quality.

The vintage

The year 2023 was marked by particularly warm and generous weather. Low rainfall caused mild water stress, encouraging good berry concentration. The months of August and September, characterised by very high temperatures, accelerated ripening. In response to these conditions, severe pruning carried out the previous year and an early halt to treatments helped preserve the freshness and impeccable health of the fruit.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes for this Montrachet Grand Cru 2023 are harvested by hand with extremely rigorous sorting. The whole bunches are then gently pressed before undergoing cold settling for around twelve hours. Alcoholic fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels. Ageing continues in barrels, with the proportion of new oak not exceeding thirty percent, for a period of eight to sixteen months, in order to preserve the full purity and identity of the terroir.
