Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for HLCF Classic Overproof Hampden
Tasting
Appearance
A coppery hue, resulting exclusively from tropical ageing in ex-bourbon casks with no artificial colouring, displaying beautiful clarity and medium viscosity.
Nose
Powerful and complex, it opens with acetone notes characteristic of high ester levels, before revealing indulgent aromas of flambéed banana and plum. Aeration releases refreshing hints of lemon and menthol.
Palate
The attack is robust, carried by its 60% ABV. It unfolds a rich aromatic palette blending bitter orange and candied cherry, supported by smoky and roasted notes. The finish is long and delicate, marked by pine resin, cooked cane syrup and herbaceous touches.
Pairing Tips and Tasting Moments
The distillery recommends enjoying this rum on the rocks (with a large ice cube) for a slow dilution that reveals its full aromatic complexity. It pairs beautifully with spiced or nutty biscuits, and especially with Jamaican ginger biscuits, whose crunch and spice echo the richness of the spirit.
Mixology
Thanks to its high ester concentration and elevated alcohol content, this rum excels in cocktails. It is particularly recommended in an Old Fashioned, garnished with a slice of dehydrated orange, where its fruity and spicy notes elevate the cocktail's classic structure without ever fading into the background.
Other Characteristics
This rum is not peated. It has an ester level of between 400 and 600 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol (g/HLPA). It comes presented in an elegant Gift Box.
A Remarkably Intense Jamaican Overproof Rum by Hampden
Hampden Estate: The Authenticity of Jamaican Rum
Founded around 1753 in the parish of Trelawny, in north-western Jamaica, the Hampden Estate distillery is a historic and emblematic figure of Jamaican rum. For over two and a half centuries, it made its name producing bulk rum for independent bottlers, before launching its own aged releases in 2018. Now run by the Hussey family (Everglades Farms Ltd.), who acquired the estate in 2009, the property jealously preserves its time-honoured production methods. Hampden stands out through its "Five Pillars": the use of local spring water, wild fermentation with indigenous yeasts, exclusive distillation in copper pot stills, 100% tropical ageing and a total absence of added sugar or colouring.
HLCF Classic Overproof: The Pure Expression of High Esters
The HLCF Classic Overproof is an emblematic release that represents the entry point into the distillery's range of high-ester rums. The acronym HLCF stands for "Hampden Light Continental Flavoured", a historic mark whose ester level ranges between 400 and 600 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol.
This rum benefits from four years of tropical ageing in Jamaica, a duration which, under these hot and humid latitudes, is equivalent to a much longer maturation under a continental climate. The making of this spirit relies on an extended seven-day fermentation, using wild yeasts and traditional raw materials such as molasses, cane vinegar, dunder and muck. This complex, natural chemistry generates an aromatic palette of rare intensity.
Bottled at 60% ABV (Overproof), this rum comes presented in a stylish case. It replaces the previous orange-label overproof version, now offering an expression from a single mark (HLCF) rather than a blend. Distributed by Velier and LMDW, this product is aimed at connoisseurs and purists seeking an uncompromising tasting experience that reflects its producer's technical expertise and century-old heritage.
