Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Hampden Pure Single Jamaican 15 Years Old

Tasting

Appearance

A deep amber hue, whose natural colour faithfully reflects its fifteen years of maturation under extreme tropical conditions.

Nose

Of remarkably high aromatic intensity, it opens immediately with notes of very ripe bananas and a slightly rubbery industrial touch, quickly enveloped by the sweetness of brown sugar. The bouquet reveals itself as rich, concentrated and deeply fragrant, unveiling dark dried fruits such as prunes and raisins, enhanced by chocolate. Deeper still, vibrant notes of green and black olives, dried apricots and banana blossoms emerge, supported by Manuka honey, lush mango and a mineral character typical of the estate's spring water.

Palate

Of medium thickness, the palate surprises with its breadth and roundness. It unfolds vibrant flavours of banana purée and green olives, accompanied by a fleshy, soapy unctuousness reminiscent of bresaola. This complexity is underpinned by earthy tones of brown sugar. The rum evolves in deep layers, releasing notes of cinnamon, clove, opulent dried fruits, ginger, grilled pineapple and dark chocolate, all retaining a smooth, perfectly saturated texture.

Pairings and tasting moments

Designed to be savoured deliberately and slowly, this spirit is ideally enjoyed neat, without dilution, in a suitable tasting glass to capture its full organoleptic complexity. It also adapts wonderfully to cold temperatures: poured over a large ice cube in an old-fashioned glass, its texture transforms into velvet and gently softens the palate. Perfect for contemplative after-dinner tasting, it masterfully accompanies chocolate desserts or complex aged cheeses.

Mixology

While its intensely concentrated aromatic profile allows it to shine in demanding cocktails such as a premium Mai Tai, the use of such a rare spirit in mixology remains debated. As an exceptional product, we strongly recommend enjoying it without embellishment to honour its incomparable quality and depth.

Other characteristics

This rum displays a very high ester content, ranging between 200 and 400 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol (LROK mark), giving it the distillery's essential "funk" aromatic signature. It is bottled at 50% ABV, without any additives, added sugar or colouring.

An Exceptional Jamaican Rum: the historical legacy of Hampden Estate

Hampden Estate: the excellence of Jamaican rum since 1753

Established in 1753 in the parish of Trelawny, at the heart of the lush Queen of Spain Valley, Hampden Estate is one of the oldest and most prestigious distilleries in Jamaica. This historic estate stands out through its preservation of artisanal production methods unchanged since the eighteenth century. The crafting of each Jamaican rum rests on unwavering pillars: the exclusive use of natural spring water, an extended wild fermentation and distillation in copper pot stills. Today led by the Hussey family, with Andrew Hussey as managing director, Hampden embodies the very essence of uncompromising craftsmanship. The distillery combines a deep respect for its heritage with a sustainable vision, offering connoisseurs spirits of absolute authenticity, without any additives.

The Pinnacle of Tropical Ageing: The Pure Single Jamaican 15 Years Old

Launched in March 2026, the Pure Single Jamaican 15 Years Old represents the oldest expression ever officially produced and bottled by the distillery. This exceptional rum perfectly defines the Pure Single Rum category, a prestigious classification initiated by Luca Gargano, highlighting a production from molasses and exclusive distillation in copper pot stills (double retort pot still).

The production process of this spirit is a genuine ode to tradition. The distillate, corresponding to the historic LROK mark, benefits from an extremely prolonged fermentation thanks to endemic wild yeasts. This rum is then aged for fifteen full years in Jamaica, in ex-American bourbon casks.

This ageing under an extreme tropical climate marks a major turning point. The heat and humidity considerably accelerate maturation, equivalent to nearly 25 years of ageing in Europe. This process generates a staggering "angels' share" exceeding 75%, a massive evaporation that concentrates the esters and magnifies the aromatic complexity of the liquid. Bottled at 50% ABV and adorned with its natural colour, this product offers the purest expression of Jamaican terroir.
