Description
An exceptional Saint-Émilion wine imbued with richness and precision
The estate
Built in 1730 in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes and renamed Château Tertre Roteboeuf following its acquisition in the late 1970s by François Mitjavile, the estate stands out for its unconventional viticulture. Low vine training, harvesting at extreme maturity, and artisanal winemaking make it a great Saint-Émilion wine.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Tertre Roteboeuf benefits from an exceptional location in Saint-Émilion. Arranged in an amphitheater with full southern exposure, it rests on clay-limestone soils that give the wines their unique character. This rare meso-climate, composed solely of hilltops oriented south-southeast, offers ideal conditions for optimal ripening of the grapes.
The vintage
The year 2016 began with a very rainy spring, followed by a dry and hot summer. Early September was marked by water stress that was relieved by beneficial rains. From mid-September, the sun, heat, and cool nights allowed for refined maturation. The summer drought slowed an already long vegetative cycle, leading to relatively late harvests in October. The fruit reached great maturity with high polyphenolic maturity, bordering on excess. Yields proved to be low on the estate.
Winemaking and aging
Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2016 benefits from aging of twenty-four months in new Radoux barrels. This aging takes place in a temperature-controlled, non-air-conditioned cellar, with regular oxygen additions through numerous rackings, allowing the wine to develop its complexity and exceptional aging potential.
Grape varieties
This Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2016 is a blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%).
