Description
The structure and depth of a Saint-Émilion wine
The estate
Château Tertre Roteboeuf, located in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes in the Bordeaux region, truly came back to life in the late 1970s when François Mitjavile took over this estate inherited by his wife Émilie. The vineyard spans 6 hectares of south-facing clay hillsides. The estate embodies a radically unconventional approach: very low vine training, late harvests, a single cuvée, and extended aging. This great Saint-Émilion wine stands out for its total independence and its quest for extreme ripeness.
The vineyard
The Tertre Roteboeuf vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. The 6 hectares of vines thrive on steep south-facing slopes, enjoying a rare microclimate. The clay-limestone soil, combined with permanent grass cover, allows the unique character of this exceptional terroir to be fully expressed.
The vintage
The 2011 vintage was marked by an exceptionally severe spring drought, the most intense recorded in 60 years, causing early ripening and giving rise to small, concentrated berries. The cool and humid month of August helped preserve the aromas and acidity of the grapes, signs of good aging potential. September offered a welcome Indian summer. The harvest took place under sunny skies, from late September to early October. This vintage combines ripe and dense fruit from the spring drought with aromatic freshness brought by the cool and humid summer.
Grape varieties
Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2011 is a blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%).
