Description
The finesse and complexity of a Saint-Émilion wine
The estate
An iconic family estate in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, Château Tertre Roteboeuf has been run since the late 1970s by François Mitjavile and his wife Émilie, now joined by their children Louis and Nina. On 6 hectares arranged in a south-facing amphitheater on clay, the vineyard cultivates mainly Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate's non-conformist approach is reflected in very late harvests, traditional concrete vinification and extended aging in new barrels. A true cult wine of the appellation, Tertre Roteboeuf received its third star from La Revue du Vin de France in 2020.
The vineyard
The Château Tertre Roteboeuf vineyard extends over approximately 6 hectares in Saint-Émilion. Set in an amphitheater with a south-facing exposure, it benefits from a particularly favorable clay terroir. The vines, with an average age of around 40 years, are cultivated according to a non-conformist philosophy favoring extremely late harvests to achieve optimal over-ripeness.
The vintage
The year 2021 proved demanding for winegrowers. Spring was disrupted, followed by a cool to mild summer. September brought warmth, accompanied by precipitation at the end of the period. These particular climatic conditions, notably the significant humidity and the late April frost, required constant vigilance. The relatively mild summer compared to previous vintages made the decision of the harvest date particularly delicate.
Grape varieties
This Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2021 is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
