Description

A great Saint-Émilion wine with exceptional power and depth

The estate
Taken over in the late 1970s by François Mitjavile, Château Tertre Roteboeuf has established itself as a cult wine of Saint-Émilion despite the absence of official classification. Located in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes on an amphitheater-shaped clay-limestone terroir, the vineyard extends over approximately 6 hectares planted mainly with merlot and cabernet franc. Now run by the Mitjavile family – François, his wife Miloute and their children Louis and Nina –, the estate is distinguished by intensive viticulture, harvesting at extreme ripeness and minimalist vinification in concrete vats without yeast addition or refrigeration.

The vineyard
The Château Tertre Roteboeuf vineyard extends over approximately 6 hectares in an amphitheater shape on clay-limestone hillsides in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, in the Saint-Émilion appellation. The low, cordon-trained vines benefit from a particularly favorable south-southeast exposure. The terroir proves slightly cooler than most Saint-Émilion estates, making Tertre Roteboeuf one of the last properties in the region to complete its harvest. This situation allows the grapes to reach extreme ripeness.

The vintage
In spring 2022, soil water reserves were low. At the end of June, heavy rains saved the vintage. The summer proved very hot, very dry and very sunny, punctuated by cool nights. Despite these extreme conditions, the vines did not suffer too much and the fruit was excellent. At the heart of this deep ripeness, freshness and digestibility expressed themselves, a paradox typical of the warm vintages of the past century, perhaps under the Atlantic influence of the Gulf Stream.

Grape varieties
This Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2022 is the result of a blend of merlot and cabernet franc.
