Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for the Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 from Domaine Henri Rebourseau

Tasting

Color

The wine displays a deep red hue with intense ruby highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals subtle aromas of red fruits, accompanied by notes of licorice and candied cherries. Hints of violet, moss, and undergrowth complete this complex bouquet.

Palate

Powerful and opulent, the palate shows fine concentration with polished tannins and an elegant structure. The palate unveils a velvety texture and remarkable depth, with aromas of black fruits, black cherry, and spices. The finish is persistent and harmonious, underscoring the exceptional aging potential of this grand cru.

Food and Wine Pairings

This Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 is an ideal match for roasted feathered game or game prepared in sauce. It also pairs beautifully with a rack of lamb en croûte, poultry in red wine sauce, or a grilled rib steak. Soft-ripened cheeses and mushroom-based dishes also make excellent pairings.

Serving and Cellaring

The Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 can be enjoyed until around 2040. It is best served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for one hour will allow the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity.

A Seductive Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru of Complexity and Refinement

The Estate

Founded in 1782 by Jacques Rebourseau, Domaine Henri Rebourseau is one of the historic estates of the Côte de Nuits in Bourgogne. The estate took shape under the leadership of General Henri Rebourseau after the First World War, when he moved in 1919 into the elegant 18th-century residence, Brunelle House. Since 2018, the Bouygues family has held the majority stake in the estate, with Bastien Giraud at the helm since 2023. The estate farms 13.5 hectares of vineyards according to organic and biodynamic principles, including about 5.28 hectares classified as grand cru. This property stands out for its parcels on terroirs cultivated for more than 1,400 years.

The Vineyard

Domaine Henri Rebourseau owns about 0.96 hectare in the Mazis-Chambertin appellation, representing nearly 10% of the total surface area of this grand cru. This parcel stretches from the lower part of the Route des Grands Crus up to the climat Chambertin Ruchottes at higher elevation. The vines, 41 years old at the time of the 2015 harvest, grow on a geological substratum of crinoidal limestone from the Lower Bajocian, composed of marine fossils and limestone outcrops running through brown soil. The vineyard benefits from optimal southern exposure and natural protection from northern winds thanks to the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Yields are deliberately limited to about 23 hectoliters per hectare, encouraging aromatic concentration.

The Vintage

The year 2015 was marked by a mild winter followed by a changeable spring with cool temperatures, then a prolonged heatwave from mid-May to mid-August. The hot, dry summer produced especially ripe grapes, with exceptional sunshine and periods of drought. Welcome rains at the end of August enabled optimal berry ripening. Many producers chose to harvest early in order to preserve the grapes’ freshness and acidity. This strategy proved wise, yielding remarkably balanced wines combining ripeness and structure. The 2015 vintage is considered one of the great years for the red wines of Bourgogne.

Winemaking and Aging

The Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 was produced according to the estate’s traditional methods, with parcel-by-parcel vinification using indigenous yeasts. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats with manual pump-overs, followed by a total maceration of 22 to 25 days. After the first run-off, the wine was racked into barrels for malolactic fermentation. Aging continued in oak barrels for about 18 months, with a significant proportion of new barrels in keeping with the estate’s practices at the time. This winemaking approach respects the organic and biodynamic principles applied in the vineyards.
