Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Valinière 2020 from Domaine Léon Barral

Tasting

Appearance

The color reveals a deeply saturated ruby red, highlighted by violet glints visible at the rim of the glass.

Nose

Intense and expressive, the nose shows remarkable complexity with aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), accompanied by toasty notes evocative of coffee and cocoa. With aeration, the bouquet broadens with nuances of herbs de Provence (thyme, rosemary), subtle floral touches, and mineral impressions reminiscent of crushed stone—hallmarks of its schist terroir.

Palate

A silky attack leads into a broad, deep palate with a fine tannic structure. The tannins, rich and well-integrated, coat the palate without harshness. The texture unfolds in successive layers of flavor: ripe black fruits, gentle spices, pronounced minerality, and subtle hints of leather. The acidity maintains a welcome freshness despite the wine’s concentration. The long, elegant finish lingers with spicy notes and a saline touch that brings refinement and distinction.

Food and wine pairings

Valinière 2020 is an ideal match for a rack of lamb with tomato, pork tenderloin with olives, or a rabbit stew with thyme. It also pairs beautifully with grilled meats, game dishes with wild mushrooms, and characterful cheeses such as Cantal or Roquefort.

Serving and cellaring

This Valinière 2020 is best served between 16 and 18°C. It is recommended to open the bottle 1 to 2 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully express itself. This wine can be enjoyed from around 2029-2030, with an optimal window between 2030 and 2038, and will continue to evolve until around 2040.

A powerful, complex wine from Faugères, an authentic expression of Languedoc’s schist terroir

The estate

Founded in the 1990s, Domaine Léon Barral spans 130 hectares, including around 30 hectares of vines, located in the hamlet of Lenthéric in Faugères, in Languedoc. Since 1990, Didier Barral has run this emblematic estate, which has become a benchmark for natural wines. In 1993, he established the estate’s own winery and stopped delivering to the cooperative, launching a winegrowing revolution built on observation and respect for natural balances. The domaine practices certified organic and biodynamic farming, integrating cattle breeding (around 60 head) and reforestation (7,000 to 8,000 trees planted) within a visionary mixed-farming approach. Didier Barral has abandoned all plowing since 2004, favoring permanent ground cover managed by animals, thereby creating a unique vineyard ecosystem that today influences the entire natural wine movement in Languedoc.

The vineyard

Valinière comes from the estate’s most exceptional plots, located on the steepest schist hillsides of the Faugères appellation, at around 300 meters of altitude. These vines, 35 to 60 years old, benefit from optimal southern exposure on iron-rich schist soils, where roots plunge as deep as nine meters. The Mediterranean climate is tempered by altitude and the influence of the Massif Central, creating a balance between daytime warmth and nighttime coolness that preserves natural acidity and aromatic complexity. The gobelet-trained vines are surrounded by permanent ground cover, never mechanically worked, promoting exceptional biodiversity and intense microbial life in the soils.

The vintage

The year 2020 offered favorable conditions that enabled optimal ripening of the grapes. The growing cycle unfolded harmoniously, culminating in a harvest of perfectly ripe, concentrated, and balanced fruit, fully expressing the character of Faugères’ schist terroir.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for Valinière 2020 are harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness, then rigorously sorted. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, with part of the crop vinified as whole clusters. Maceration lasts three to four weeks with manual punch-downs. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation naturally, followed by 36 months of aging in large, old foudres. No racking, fining, or filtration is carried out. Bottling is done in a way that preserves the wine’s integrity and authenticity.
