An Elegant, Complex Corton Grand Cru by Domaine Ponsot
The Estate
Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Ponsot is among Burgundy’s most prestigious producers. A pioneer of estate bottling as early as 1934, it also distinguished itself in Pinot Noir clonal selection during the 1960s. Today, Rose-Marie Ponsot runs the estate, supported by Alexandre Abel as technical director. The domaine stands out for its natural winegrowing approach, late harvesting, and exclusive aging in old barrels, with no new oak.
The Vineyard
Corton Grand Cru "Cuvée du Bourdon" comes from 0.6 hectare spread across three distinct climats within the Corton appellation, located in the Côte de Beaune: 60% of the grapes come from Les Paulands, 20% from Perrières, and 20% from Clos du Roy. The vines, around thirty years old, benefit from well-established roots that allow for a deep expression of the terroir. This mosaic of parcels brings complexity and balance to the finished wine.
The Vintage
The 2020 vintage in Bourgogne benefited from favorable weather conditions, with a growing season marked by heat and drought. These conditions made it possible to obtain grapes of impeccable health. Wines from the 2020 vintage are characterized by excellent depth of color, a generous fruit expression, and perfectly balanced acidity, ensuring outstanding aging potential.
Winemaking and Aging
Corton Grand Cru "Cuvée du Bourdon" 2020 is made using Domaine Ponsot’s traditional methods, with fermentation by indigenous yeasts and no use of new oak. Aging takes place for eighteen months in exclusively old French oak barrels, in keeping with the estate’s philosophy that favors the pure expression of fruit and terroir. This approach preserves the wine’s aromatic authenticity and structural finesse.
