The estate
Founded in the late 1920s by Pierre Ramonet, Domaine Ramonet has established itself as one of Burgundy’s most respected producers. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet, the estate now covers 17 hectares spread across more than twenty-four different appellations. Since 1984, Jean-Claude and Noël Ramonet, representing the third generation, have run the estate, supported by Anne-France and Clarisse Ramonet of the fourth generation. Internationally renowned for its outstanding Chardonnay-based white wines, the estate also produces remarkable red wines, which account for around 30% of total production.
The vineyard
This Chassagne-Montrachet comes from plots located within the village appellation of Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. The vineyard benefits from characteristic clay-limestone soils that give the wines their distinctive minerality. The vines are farmed according to sustainable viticulture principles, with particular attention paid to limiting yields in order to promote aromatic concentration. The estate favors vines at least eighteen years old for crafting its cuvées, ensuring optimal expression of the terroir.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was marked by contrasting weather conditions. Winter saw an episode of frost of rare intensity affecting the entire French vineyard. A milder spring allowed flowering at the end of May, followed by particularly rainy months in June and July. Weather instability continued from mid-July to mid-August. Despite these challenges, attentive winegrowers were able to harvest grapes of fine quality thanks to rigorous sorting, producing wines with beautiful aromatic balance.
Winemaking and aging
The winemaking of this red Chassagne-Montrachet 2021 follows traditional Burgundian protocols that favor gentle extraction. Maceration is deliberately short and delicate to avoid excessive extraction of astringent tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for around eighteen months, with approximately 33% new oak. This approach helps develop aromatic complexity while preserving the expression of the fruit and the finesse characteristic of the terroir.
