Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for Geantet-Pansiot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2014
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep garnet hue of remarkable intensity, avoiding extremes to deliver perfect visual balance. This rich color reflects well-managed extraction and optimal concentration.
Nose
The bouquet unfolds gradually, first revealing aromas of concentrated black fruits, notably blackcurrant and morello cherry, accompanied by delicate floral notes of violet and rose. Underneath, tertiary nuances of forest floor emerge, with hints of truffle, fine leather and humus. A spicy expression also defines the aromatic profile, with notes of black pepper, clove and cinnamon. This complexity intensifies with aeration, revealing successive layers of aromas.
Palate
The tannic structure is tight yet not aggressive, marked by fine, silky tannins. A delicate attack gradually opens up, revealing an underlying, muscular frame. The palate is generous and rich, with a silky texture rather than a rough edge. Intense fruit remains central, embodying the estate’s philosophy. The finish lingers long on the back palate, gradually revealing additional nuances. Spicy notes build on the finish, while a slight bitterness adds a refined dimension.
Food and wine pairings
This grand cru pairs perfectly with fine red meats such as roast beef, beef fillet en croûte or veal chop with morels. Fur-bearing game such as venison, wild boar and lièvre à la royale also makes for a classic, outstanding match. Slow-simmered dishes in sauce such as coq au vin or beef bourguignon create an exceptional culinary harmony. Aged, hard cheeses, notably époisses, langres, comté or beaufort, are also excellent choices.
Serving and cellaring
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 deserves to be left for around ten years so that its aging integrates and it reveals its immense potential. The wine should be stored at a stable temperature between 12 and 15°C, away from direct light and in a horizontal position. For tasting, decanting may be considered to encourage aromatic expression.
A Burgundian Grand Cru marked by concentration and finesse
The estate
The Geantet-Pansiot estate was founded in 1954 in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, following the marriage of Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot. Starting with 3 hectares, the estate now covers around 22 to 32 hectares spread across several prestigious appellations. Jointly run by Vincent Geantet, who joined the business in 1977 and took over its management in 1989, and his son Fabien, who arrived in 2006, the estate embodies three generations of family expertise. The estate’s philosophy is built on respect for the terroir, sustainable farming without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, and winemaking techniques that favor the authentic expression of fruit and terroir.
The vineyard
The Clos de Vougeot, founded around 1110 by the Abbey of Cîteaux, is one of the most prestigious terroirs in Burgundy. This grand cru spans around 50 hectares shared among more than 80 different owners. Set between 240 and 260 meters above sea level with an average slope of 3.8%, Clos de Vougeot features complex, diverse geology. The subsoil is predominantly made up of limestone conglomerates with a limestone-clay binder, while 15 to 20% of the Clos lies on an alluvial fan composed of silt and stones. This geological diversity gives the terroir exceptional expressive range. The thin, well-draining limestone and clay-limestone soils allow roots to develop deep down, producing wines marked by pronounced minerality and a lively acidity that preserves freshness.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage proved very favorable for the Côte de Nuits. After a mild winter, the year brought some early climatic challenges, but harvesting began around mid-September in a calm, sunny atmosphere, with the return of sunshine and northerly winds. The grapes produced beautifully balanced wines with intense color. The Côte de Nuits here delivers a very fine vintage with perfectly consistent quality. The wines are charming and perfectly balanced, with supple, silky tannins supported by fleshy substance. Their aging potential is unquestionable.
Winemaking and aging
Geantet-Pansiot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 comes from hand-harvested grapes followed by meticulous, rigorous sorting. The grapes are 100% destemmed. The estate carries out a pre-fermentation cold soak—a true house signature—that heightens aromatic freshness. This technique is followed by a light carbonic maceration. Fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without the use of commercial selected yeasts. Aging lasts around 13 to 14 months in Burgundy barrels, with 30% new oak. The estate carries out no racking, fining or filtration, fully preserving the wine’s tannic structure and aromatic complexity.
