Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Cuvée Les Chorégies 2022
Tasting
Color
The color, of rare concentration and beautiful intensity, shows bluish highlights.
Nose
The bouquet opens with powerful spicy notes, underpinned by floral accents, on a foundation of ripe fruit.
Palate
On the palate, elegance comes through: the harmony between fruit and flowers is clear, carried by a fine, racy tannic structure and extended by a long, balanced finish.
Food and wine pairings
A Tournedos Rossini, a spit-roasted leg of lamb, or a venison steak are refined companions.
Serving and cellaring potential
For optimal tasting, serve between 16 and 18°C, after 3 hours of decanting. This Cuvée can age in the cellar until around 2037.
The elegance and richness of a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The estate
Named after the oratory below its first plot, L’Oratoire des Papes has embodied the timeless link between pleasure and prestige for nearly 150 years. These wines, which reveal the purest yet contemporary expression of the four defining soil types of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, are renowned far beyond the region for their elegance.
The vineyard
One of the key distinguishing features of Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies in the richness and diversity of its soils, formed across three different geological periods. Limestone fragments, rounded pebbles, safre and red sandstone can be found there. True to this diversity, the estate takes a respectful approach to the terroir by applying organic farming principles in the vineyards and favoring low-intervention vinification in the cellar, in order to preserve the authenticity and uniqueness of the terroirs.
The wine
The Clos de L’Oratoire des Papes Les Chorégies collection, produced as both red and white wines, comes from a selection of outstanding plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. From plots of old vines planted in the 1960s on rounded pebbles (for the red wines), these wines from the Rhône reveal a concentration of elegance, tension and generosity.
Winemaking and aging
Les Chorégies Rouge was vinified exclusively in 18-hL foudres. The vinification, carried out mostly with whole clusters, takes advantage of the elongated shape of the foudres, which provides a large exchange surface between must and skins during fermentation. The skins then remain submerged to gently prolong extraction through an infusion process. The ripe, supple tannins are naturally released during a 5- to 7-week skin fermentation.
The base wines of the blend age for 12 months in foudres, 300-liter barrels and amphorae, in proportions determined by the vintage, then 7 months in concrete tanks and 18 months in bottle.
