The estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean Latour in Aloxe-Corton, Louis Latour is the largest holder of Grands Crus in Burgundy's Côte d’Or with approximately 28.63 hectares. Under the management of the eleventh generation of the family, this independent house owns vineyards in the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. A pioneer of modern winemaking methods since the 19th century, the house combines tradition and modernity in its historic cellars in Beaune.
The vineyard
Clos du Roi is a small 13-hectare plot in the north of the Beaune appellation. This historic terroir, once owned by the Dukes of Burgundy and later the French royal family, benefits from a south/south-east exposure on clay-limestone soils. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are farmed traditionally, with yields limited to 40 hl/ha and harvested by hand.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking is traditional in open vats with full malolactic fermentation. Aging takes place for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels (medium toast) from the Louis Latour cooperage, 35% of which are new.
