A White Wine from La Rioja with Rediscovered Traditional Methods

The Estate

Founded in 1879 in Haro by two brothers, CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) remains a family-owned business in La Rioja, run by the fifth generation of direct descendants of the founders. The estate farms extensive vineyards spread across Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. CVNE has established itself as a pioneering house thanks to its revolutionary innovations: Eiffel architecture in 1909, the first concrete winery in Spain in 1940, and the country’s first gravity-flow system in 1989. This unique ability to combine tradition and innovation makes CVNE an essential reference in La Rioja.

The Vineyard

The grapes used to produce this Monopole Clásico Reserva come from a vineyard located in Villalba de Rioja. Planted fifteen years ago, this terroir in Rioja enjoys an eastern exposure and sits on limestone soils. Situated at over 600 meters of altitude, the vineyard is trained on trellis to protect the vines from the winds. This privileged geographical situation gives the grapes optimal ripeness and remarkable aromatic concentration.

Winemaking and Aging

The Monopole Clásico Reserva 2021 is produced according to traditional 1960s methods. Manual harvesting is followed by gentle pressing and transfer to vats. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked off the juices with their fine lees into used barrels and “botas” of various capacities (300, 400, and 500 liters). The aging period lasts eight months, including a biological aging phase under a yeast veil (“flor”).

Grape Variety

This white wine is made exclusively from Viura, the traditional white grape variety of La Rioja renowned for its ability to produce elegant and ageworthy wines.
