A powerful and complex Spanish red wine
The estate
Founded in 1998 by the Eguren family and now owned by LVMH under the direction of Lucas Löwi, Bodega Numanthia spans 83 hectares in Valdefinjas in Castile and Leon. The estate stands out for its exceptional vineyard with vines that survived the phylloxera plague and are farmed organically.
The vineyard
The vines producing this wine thrive on the terroir of Toro, marked by an extreme continental climate, and are between 50 and 120 years old.
The vintage
The year 2020 began with a rainy spring, followed by a dry and hot ripening phase, particularly pronounced in August. To preserve a good level of red fruit and beautiful acidity, the harvest was brought forward by a few days and took place between September 8th and 29th.
Winemaking and aging
Numanthia favors an artisanal approach with manual harvesting, hand destemming and foot treading of the grapes. Numanthia 2020 was fully destemmed before a 5-day cold pre-fermentation maceration. Alcoholic fermentation took place over 7 days at a temperature between 26 and 28°C, accompanied by daily pump-overs. Post-fermentation maceration with skins and light treading was carried out for another week. Malolactic fermentation took place in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The aging of this Castile and Leon wine took place over 16 months in French oak barrels of 225 and 400 liters, 60% new and 40% second-fill, with racking every 4 months.
