Description

A full and structured South African red wine

The estate

Located in the Swartland region of South Africa, the Sadie Family estate was founded in 1999 by Eben Sadie and his brother and sister. After having travelled extensively in Europe, this passionate winegrower decided to revive the old vines of his native land while planting grape varieties from southern Europe adapted to the Mediterranean-like climate of the Cape. This atypical South African winemaker is today the charismatic face of the revival of quality South African wines. For more than two decades, his constant quest for excellent quality has been unparalleled and his wines are now sought after all over the world.

The vineyard

Treinspoor Tinta Barroca 2021 is a Western Cap wine that stems from a vineyard planted in 1974 west of Malmesbury on a gravel plain made up of sandstone, granite and quartz.

The wine

This Swartland wine owes its name treinspoor (railway) to the old train line located next to the vineyard.

Winemaking and ageing

After the harvest, 50% of the crop was destemmed. Fermentation lasted 25 to 30 days before pressing in an old basket press. The wine was then transferred to 28-year-old conical wooden barrels. After 11 months of ageing on the lees, the wine was racked into a concrete tank for another month. Two weeks before bottling, 65 mg/litre of sulphur was added.
