Description

Tasting Characteristics and Advice for the Frescobaldi - Tenuta di Nipozzano Mormoreto 2020

Tasting

Color

The wine displays an intense, bright ruby hue, enhanced by distinctive purplish highlights.

Nose

Extremely complex, the nose reveals a multidimensional bouquet combining aromas of wild berries (blueberry, blackcurrant, raspberry), griottine cherry and cherry. Nuances of fleshier fruits such as fig and date are accompanied by citrus notes reminiscent of citron and bergamot. The bouquet continues with aromas of lightly toasted dried fruits, cinnamon, black tea and coffee. Perfectly integrated balsamic notes mingle with spicy touches of white pepper and licorice.

Palate

On the palate, this full-bodied, well-balanced wine unfurls a persistent structure across the palate. Soft, silky tannins harmonize with decisive acidity, delivering optimal hedonistic balance and lasting freshness in the mouth. The finish stands out for its remarkable length, reflecting the fruit’s substantial concentration and the wine’s structural complexity.

Food and Wine Pairings

The Mormoreto 2020 is an ideal match for grilled red meats, ribs and roast beef. It also pairs perfectly with braised meat stews, semi-hard or hard aged cheeses, as well as Tuscan preparations featuring tomato, basil and olive oil.

Serving and Cellaring

This Mormoreto 2020 can be enjoyed now while also offering multi-decade aging potential. An optimal tasting window opens three to four years after the harvest.

A Tuscan Red Wine Blending Bordeaux Tradition with the Chianti Rufina Terroir

The Estate

The Frescobaldi family has been producing wine in Tuscany for more than seven hundred years, establishing commercial contracts with European royal courts as early as the thirteenth century. Castello Nipozzano was acquired by the family in 1855, a date marking the pioneering introduction of Bordeaux varieties in Tuscany. Today, under the leadership of Marquis Lamberto Frescobaldi, representing the thirtieth generation, the family group manages several estates across Tuscany, preserving its independence and traditional values while integrating contemporary managerial expertise, with Fabrizio Dosi as CEO.

The Vineyard

The Mormoreto vineyard lies at 300 meters above sea level in the Chianti Rufina appellation area, about twenty kilometers east of Florence. Planted on sandy soils with a south-west exposure, it benefits from cooling breezes from the Tuscan Apennines that temper summer temperatures and extend the ripening cycle. This privileged setting in Tuscany gives the wines preserved aromatic freshness and balanced concentration that are characteristic of the terroir.

The Vintage

The 2020 vintage begins with a rainy autumn, allowing substantial water reserves to build up. Winter is marked by relatively mild temperatures, while spring records above-average seasonal temperatures, fostering a remarkable balance between vegetative growth and fruit production. Favorable summer conditions, combined with cool nighttime temperatures, ensure optimal vine health. Rainfall in late August and late September enables both early- and late-ripening varieties to complete their ripening cycles with excellent concentration, expressing decisive acidity and high sugar levels.

Winemaking and Aging

After hand-harvesting into fifteen-kilogram crates and double selection in the vineyard and then in the cellar, alcoholic fermentation for the Mormoreto 2020 takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for approximately twenty-five days. Malolactic fermentation occurs immediately after racking. The wine then ages for two years in French oak barrels, with 15 to 20% new oak at a medium toast level, the remainder consisting of second- or third-fill barrels. Several additional months of bottle aging follow before release.

Grape Varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Petit Verdot (20%), Sangiovese (15%), Cabernet Franc (10%).
