Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Sancerre Red L'Original 2020 by Joseph Mellot
Tasting
Color
The color is a bright and clear ruby hue.
Nose
The bouquet is intense and complex, harmoniously combining aromas of small red fruit such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by spicy and balsamic nuances.
Palate
The attack on the palate is supple, before giving way to a texture that is both dense and fine, giving the whole a beautiful depth. This structure accompanies the fruity character of the wine and gives it remarkable length.
Food and wine pairings
This red Sancerre pairs perfectly with a risotto with shaved white truffle, a piece of grilled beef or a quail stuffed with grapes.
Service and storage
To fully enjoy this wine, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 11 and 13°C.
A red Sancerre that expresses the link between earth and wine
The estate
Based in Sancerre since 1513 with Pierre-Étienne Mellot, the Joseph Mellot estate continues more than five centuries of winemaking tradition in the Loire Valley. Under the management of Catherine Corbeau-Mellot, supported by her sons Armand and Adrien, the estate manages more than 100 hectares, spread over the eight appellations of the Centre-Loire. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture in the region, Joseph Mellot has established himself as an ambassador for great Loire wines.
The vineyard
"L'Original" comes from a 0.5-hectare plot in Sancerre, planted with 30-year-old Pinot Noir vines. The terroir consists of calcareous marl, which is mechanically worked within the framework of sustainable viticulture.
The vintage
The year 2020 began with a mild and rainy winter, followed by a warm and sunny spring. The summer was marked by very high temperatures with heatwaves, while the autumn continued this trend with sunny and very warm weather.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest is carried out manually at the beginning of September. Fermentation of the Sancerre Rouge L'Original 2020 takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, accompanied by pump-overs and delestage. Maceration lasts 16 days. This cuvée is the subject of a new experiment with one year of aging, divided between terracotta vessels (60%) and porcelain vessels (40%), highlighting the link between earth and wine to fully express the potential of the terroir.
Grape variety
This Loire wine comprises 100% Pinot Noir.
