A coastal Pinot Noir from the Chilean Limarí Valley with a Burgundian character
The estate
Founded in 2002 by Guillermo Luksic, Viña Tabali represents the first modern winery in the Limarí Valley, located in the Coquimbo region of northern Chile. The vineyard extends over 151 hectares spread across three plots with contrasting terroirs: Talinay, a coastal vineyard located twelve kilometers from the Pacific on marine limestone soils unique to the country, and Río Hurtado, an Andean plot reaching 1,600 meters in altitude on volcanic substrate. Under the direction of Nicolas Luksic, the estate cultivates Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Carménère in a minimalist approach highlighting the authentic expression of the terroirs, enhanced by the influence of the Camanchaca coastal fog.
The vineyard
The Talinay vineyard is located in the Limarí Valley, just twelve kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, bordering the Fray Jorge National Park, classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Situated at an altitude of 150 meters on limestone slopes, the terroir rests on porous and fractured limestone soil derived from an ancient marine terrace, rich in calcium carbonate which acts as a natural water regulator. The site benefits from a cool coastal climate with a constant sea breeze, making it the coolest area in Limarí where maximum summer temperatures reach approximately 23.5°C. These particular conditions delay the harvest by two to three weeks compared to other Chilean coastal zones.
Winemaking and aging
After manual harvesting, 70% of the grapes were destemmed while 30% were fermented as whole clusters. The Talinay Pinot Noir 2021 benefited from a cold maceration for seven days at 8°C, followed by fermentation with native yeasts in small stainless steel tanks at a temperature between 20 and 26°C. Gentle manual pump-overs were carried out during fermentation. A short post-fermentation maceration added more body to this Coquimbo wine. The entire cuvée underwent malolactic fermentation before aging for twelve months in French oak barrels from Fontainebleau, Jupille, Bertrange, Tronçais, and Allier.
