Characteristics and tasting advice for Bodega Noemia Malbec 2020
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep violet hue with intense garnet highlights, reflecting the wine’s concentration and youth.
Nose
The nose opens on a complex bouquet dominated by black fruits, notably blackberry and plum, alongside notes of cherry. Aromas of dark chocolate and coffee blend harmoniously with mineral nuances of graphite and slate. Floral hints of violet and sweet spices, notably clove and black pepper, complete this sophisticated aromatic palette.
Palate
On the palate, the wine shows an elegant, refined structure, with intense black-fruit flavors that unfold generously. Silky, well-integrated tannins provide structure without harshness. The balance between fruit concentration, notes of chocolate and coffee, and bright acidity gives the wine lovely harmony. The lingering finish leaves an impression of complexity and elegance.
Food and wine pairings
This Malbec pairs ideally with herb-roasted Patagonian lamb, grilled red meats, or a selection of aged cheeses such as Manchego. It also matches very well with mushroom-based dishes or pepper-seasoned preparations.
Serving and cellaring
Bodega Noemia Malbec 2020 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2035. Decanting for one hour helps fully reveal its aromatic complexity. Ideally serve between 16 and 18°C.
An exceptional Malbec from the Río Negro Valley in Patagonia
The estate
Founded in 2001 by Danish winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers and Contessa Noemi Marone Cinzano, Bodega Noemia has established itself as one of Patagonia’s most prestigious estates. Since 2018, Hans Vinding-Diers has been the sole owner and has run the estate alongside his wife. The vineyard spans around six hectares in the Río Negro Valley, including a historic 1.5-hectare plot planted in 1932 with pre-phylloxera vines. Certified organic and biodynamic, the estate produces Malbecs of exceptional elegance, defined by their pronounced minerality and freshness—true reflections of Patagonia’s desert terroir and decisively minimalist viticultural practices.
The vineyard
Bodega Noemia’s vineyard is located in the Río Negro Valley, at around 240 meters above sea level, in northern Patagonia. This historic 1.5-hectare plot, planted in 1932, is home to pre-phylloxera, massal-selection vines, now over 90 years old. The glacial-origin soils are composed of sand, gravel, and river sediments resting on a limestone bed. The desert climate—marked by warm days and cool nights—together with the proximity of the Río Negro river, creates ideal conditions for producing elegant, fresh, mineral Malbecs. Vineyard management follows the principles of organic and biodynamic farming.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Patagonia was characterized by a wet, cold winter, followed by a cool, damp spring in the first part, then dry conditions with cool winds in the second part. Summer remained relatively cool with a few brief heat spikes, while autumn brought conditions close to historical averages. This warm year led to rapid grape ripening and a condensed harvest window, producing concentrated Argentine wines with pronounced fruit character.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Bodega Noemia Malbec 2020 are hand-harvested at dawn and sorted berry by berry. Vinification takes place in small temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Around 25% whole clusters are included during fermentation. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for fourteen to eighteen months in 600-liter French oak demi-muids, with partial time in Nomblot concrete eggs. The wine is bottled without filtration or fining, then aged for an additional six months before release.
Grape variety
100% Malbec.
