Cristal by Louis Roederer: a surprising history
The Cristal cuvée from Maison Louis Roederer, a symbol of prestige, has a fascinating origin linked to Russia. Created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II, this cuvée was born from a special request by the emperor, who desired an exclusive champagne. Fearing for his safety, the tsar demanded that the champagne be presented in a transparent crystal bottle with a flat bottom, rather than in traditional green bottles. This choice of material gave the cuvée its name. Initially intended for the Russian market, Cristal was only marketed worldwide in 1924, after the Russian Revolution of 1917.
Today, although only the crystal has been replaced, the bottle shape and imperial coat of arms remain unchanged, making this cuvée a historic champagne.
An exceptional cuvée
Cristal is crafted only in great years, reflecting meticulous craftsmanship and vintage expression. Composed of approximately 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, this cuvée is a great wine that embodies the chalky terroirs of Champagne, notably the Côte des Blancs, the Grands Crus of the Montagne de Reims and the Marne Valley.
Champagne Cristal is aged for at least 6 years in the House's chalk cellars, followed by 8 months of rest after disgorgement, allowing time to perfect its development.
Remarkable vintages to explore
Each vintage of Cristal expresses a singular style, revealing complex aromas of citrus fruits, white fruits, and candied fruits, all enhanced by an elegant iodized minerality. On the palate, Cristal distinguishes itself with a silky texture, unveiling finesse, power, and purity, and promises magnificent evolution in the cellar.
Each year, Cristal embodies the unique identity of its vintage and the expression of its precious limestone terroir. The 2005 vintage, for example, highlights the personality of Chardonnay with a distinctive aromatic signature and a velvety palate. Furthermore, the 2006 vintage, from a sunny year, seduces with its maturity and freshness. As for Cristal 2008, it stands out for its density and power while maintaining remarkable freshness.
