Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1998
Tasting
Colour
The wine has a deep garnet-red colour with subtle, slightly brick-tinged highlights that reflect its remarkable evolution.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is highly complex. Marine and mineral notes of iodine, oyster and stone intertwine with herbaceous hints of mint and classic aromas of black fruit, smoke and tobacco.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is full, dense and muscular, yet it retains a surprising agility. Perfectly polished tannins support a powerful, taut structure. The exceptionally long finish lingers with a racy freshness and complex flavours.
Food and wine pairing
This great red wine pairs beautifully with fine meats such as roast dry-aged beef, rack of lamb or game birds served with a red wine reduction. Mushroom or truffle accompaniments will perfectly highlight its earthy nuances.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the complexity of Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1998, decant it one to two hours before tasting and serve at around 16°C. Although it has exceptional ageing potential, this vintage is now at its peak for drinking.
The elegance and power of a great red wine from Pessac-Léognan
The estate
Founded in 1540 by Arnaud de Lestonnac, La Mission Haut-Brion and its vineyard rank among the jewels of Bordeaux in France. In 1983, this historic property was acquired by the family-owned company Domaine Clarence Dillon, founded in 1935, which also owns the illustrious Château Haut-Brion. Now headed by Prince Robert of Luxembourg, the group upholds a tradition of excellence. The estate stands out for its rich heritage, shaped by the presence of the Lazarist Fathers in the 17th century, and for its constant pursuit of precision in bringing out the best in its terroir.
The vineyard
Located on the edge of the city, this vineyard lies at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vines grow on superb mounds of deep gravel mixed with sand and pebbles, all resting on a clay subsoil. This unique urban setting enjoys a temperate oceanic microclimate that promotes optimal ripening of the grapes. The estate is managed with meticulous agronomic care, and regular replanting preserves the integrity and longevity of this exceptional terroir.
Winemaking and ageing
Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1998 is made in state-of-the-art facilities, the legacy of modernisation begun in the 20th century and further refined by the Dillon family. Vinification is carried out with great precision in stainless steel vats, allowing rigorous control of temperatures and fermentations. The aim is to capture the very essence of the terroir while preserving the wine's balance and ageing potential, reflecting an approach that is both classic and resolutely contemporary.
