    Decanter

This is one of Romain Taupenot's oldest vineyards, planted in 1948. Mazoyères seems to have fared better in the hot conditions of 2017 than neighbouring Charmes-Chambertin, as this wine has more acidity and depth than its stablemate, with good tension and depth with layers of sappy, chalky, dark berry fruit.

In tank and will be bottled in February. Has the Morey character, says Romain Taupenot. Darker and more peppery than the Charmes-Chambertin with just a hint of dark chocolate. Dark on the palate, peppery spice yet even in this darker character it has a slight floral note. Darkly refined in its fruit profile. There a slight charry smokiness, a little closed in on itself. Super-fine texture, like layers of paper. Long and refined. (JH)

The 2017 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru has a glorious bouquet of briary, blackberry and cranberry scents, plus a touch of sous-bois in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that belie the structure. Fresh and full of energy, this fans out nicely toward the chalky-textured finish, yet with time in the glass it does lose a bit of energy, which is why I docked a point. Closure is Diam 30 Organic. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

    Bettane+Desseauve

A racy palate for this Mazoyères with a licorice nose; the finish is slightly saline, and it only lacks the crystalline precision of the very best.

    Description

A Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru that captivates with its aromatic richness and finesse

    The estate

Domaine Taupenot-Merme was founded in 1963 through the union of Denise Merme and Jean Taupenot, the 7th generation of two Burgundian families whose winemaking history dates back to the 18th century. Based in Morey Saint Denis, the estate has become a benchmark among the great Burgundy wines, thanks to the development of both its terroir and its winemaking methods.

    The vineyard

Farmed organically since 2001, the Domaine Taupenot-Merme vineyard covers 13 hectares. Its old vines, which average 35 years of age and reach 60 years on certain plots, are spread across iconic Grand Cru and Premier Cru terroirs, as well as village and regional appellations.

    The wine

This Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine Taupenot-Merme comes from a 0.85-hectare vineyard on a gentle slope, at an altitude of 280 metres. Planted on clay-limestone soil and around fifty years old, the vines, mostly derived from massal selection, are renowned for the quality and finesse of their grapes.

    Winemaking and ageing

Harvested by hand at full ripeness, the grapes are carefully transported to the cellar, avoiding any risk of oxidation or uncontrolled pre-fermentation maceration, before undergoing rigorous sorting. Cold pre-fermentation maceration (10°C) for 8 to 10 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by fermentation maceration for 7 to 9 days with manual punching down and pumping over. Manual devatting without pumping, followed by fractional low-pressure pneumatic pressing to ensure the extraction of the noblest tannins. The press wine is tasted before blending. Barrelling takes place 36 to 48 hours after settling in order to retain as much of the fine lees as possible. Lasting 15 to 18 months, ageing on the lees is carried out in oak barrels (40 to 50% of them new). Bottled without fining or filtration to optimise the natural expression of the terroir.

    Blend

The Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine Taupenot-Merme is 100% Pinot Noir.

    Tasting notes

    Appearance

Deep in colour, the wine displays subtle highlights.

    Nose

Intense, the nose blends fruity aromas with animal and liquorice notes.

    Palate

Ample and complex, the palate reveals lovely length alongside fine tannins.

    Food and wine pairing

This Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine Taupenot-Merme is an ideal match for leg of mutton, boeuf bourguignon, civet stews, coq au vin, game pâtés or powerful cheeses, with the exception of blue cheeses.

    Serving

To enjoy this wine at its best, serve it at 14-15°C in its youth, opening the bottle 1 hour beforehand and decanting it to release its aromatic expression. As it evolves over time, this wine can be enjoyed at 16-17°C.

    Ageing potential

Already approachable, this great Mazoyères-Chambertin wine will show more supple tannins from 2023-2025, but can also be cellared until 2032-2037 to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
