The 2012 Cornas Les Terres Brûlées is a soft, sexy and forward effort that offers plenty of truffle, wild herb, peppered meat and sweet, darker-styled fruit. It’s a hedonistic, well-made Cornas to drink over the coming decade.

    James Molesworth

Packed with dark plum, blackberry and anise notes at the core, laced with bay, sweet tapenade and iron on the finish. This has heft and cut, energy and length. Should cellar well. Best from 2016 through 2022. 1,700 cases made.

    Description

A Rhône Valley red wine that entices with complexity and finesse

    The estate

Two epicurean oenologists, Jean-Luc Colombo and his wife founded the eponymous estate in 1987, with the ambition of making great Cornas wines that bring to the fore all the potential of this Rhône Valley terroir. Jean-Luc Colombo, with his passion for winemaking, favours a plot-based vinification in order to bring out the pure and authentic expression of the old vines that make up his vineyard.

    The wine

This Cornas wine is produced from a meticulous selection of around twenty plots. The vines are forty years old on average and are planted on granitic soil, a typical feature of the appellation.

    Winemaking and ageing

Hand-picked in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit, the grapes are destemmed and then vinified in temperature-controlled vats for 3 weeks. The wine is aged for 21 months in oak barrels, 85% of which are from second to fourth-fill barrels and 15% from new barrels.

    Blend

    Syrah (100%)
