    Alison Napjus

A round, focused red, with a toasty edge to its flavours of fig cake, raspberry compote, vanilla and singed sage. This is bright, with blood orange peel–infused acidity, and light, fine tannins define the savoury finish of fragrant spices and tarry smoke. Drink now through 2032. 750 cases imported.

    James Suckling

This is a fragrant pinotage, showing mint-chocolate, cedar, cherry, spiced-plum and nutmeg aromas. Firm, spicy and full-bodied on the palate with firm yet ripe tannins and a long, spicy and focused finish. Better after 2025.

    Description

The richness and balance of a South African Red wine

    The estate

The family estate Kanonkop Wine Estate, founded in 1910 by the Sauer family, takes its name from an emblematic hill (kop) on Simonsberg Mountain. In the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon shot (kanon) was fired there to signal the arrival of sailing ships in baie de la Table, allowing farmers to travel to the port, located 50 kilometers away, to sell their fruits and vegetables.

The production of the estate's first wines began in 1973 under the impetus of Paul Sauer, a politician who sat in the South African parliament for 41 years, determined to elevate South African wines to the highest level.

Today, brothers Johann and Paul Krige, representatives of the fourth generation, continue this family tradition. Their wines are acclaimed beyond borders for their faithful and refined expression of the Stellenbosch terroir, one of the flagship appellations of the Western Cape.

    The vineyard

An essential wine from Western Cape, Kanonkop Wine Estate's Pinotage comes from vines planted on the slopes of Simonsberg and Stellenbosch. These vines, averaging 32 to 67 years old, are rooted in soils partially composed of decomposed granite.

    Grape variety

This 2022 Pinotage from Kanonkop Wine Estate is 100% Pinotage.
